Inter completes a turnaround to win the Milan derby

inter milan 4 ac milan 2Inter Milan registered their four consecutive victories in Milan derbies in Serie A since 1983 and went on top of the Serie A table on Sunday after defeating their cross-city rivals by a margin of 4-2. Inter Milan turned around their two-goal deficit over AC Milan to win the fixture. Nerazzuri’s move to the top of the table on the basis of their better goal difference after Hellas Verona defeated the Old Lady with a scoreline of 2-1 on Sunday. On the other hand, AC Milan are in 10th place with 32 points.

Inter’s manager, Antonio Conte admitted that his team can dream about the title though they face tough challenges by the likes of third-placed Lazio. Also, Inter will face Napoli in the first leg of Coppa Italia semifinal. On the other hand, Inter have to be cautious regarding their title pursuit as Lazio are just a point away from the top place. “It’s still very early to talk about something we can only dream of for now,” 

“We can have a dream. It’s a very intense period for us coming up and after that we’ll have a better idea of our potential and our real capabilities.

“We must face important matches, starting from Wednesday’s with Napoli, then Lazio, who have really strengthened over the years.

“We can’t achieve everything from one day to the next, but we are building. These guys proved they have great strength and guts today.”

AC Milan started the game strongly and with an intention to win the game. They came close to score the goal when Hakan Calhanhoglu tried to pull off a belter from outside the box. However, the deadlock remained until Rebic tapped in the pass from Zlatan to get the well-deserved lead. After getting an assist, Zlatan didn’t sit quietly as he scored a point-blank header in the additional minutes of the first half.  AC Milan went into the break with a  scoreline of 2-0. In the meanwhile, Zlatan became the oldest player to score in Milan derby at the age of 38 years and 129 days.

lukaku vs ac milanHowever, the game wasn’t over and Inter came back strongly in the second half. Brozovic scored a thunderous volley from the edge of the area in the 51st minute. Two minutes later, Alexis Sanchez avoided the offside trap and assisted Vecino to fire the equalizer for Nerazzurri’s.

Conte wasn’t happy with equalizer and started snooping for the victory. de Vrij stopped high to score a goal from the header in the 70th minute before former Red Devil, Romelu Lukaku putting the final nail in AC Milan’s coffin scoring in the injury time.

Post-match, AC Milan’s striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic said that the shoulders were dropped by the players after they were 2-0 at half time. He said:

“We stopped playing, the team stopped believing, we stopped pressing, didn’t pass it around enough,” 

“From the equaliser onwards, everything collapsed.”
