Golden State Warriors Team History:

  • Golden State Warriors team was founded in 1946 and were named Philadelphia Warriors. 
  • Philadelphia Warriors was one of an integral part of the Basketball Association of America, especially after their first Championship win in their debut season in 1947. 
  • Under the Philadelphia Warriors name, the side won two championships in 1947 and 1956. 
  • In 1959 the side drafted Wilt Chamberlain who went on to become one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. Chamberlain is mostly known for his 100 points in 1961-1962 regular season contest. 
  • Philadelphia Warriors was renamed to San Francisco Warriors after a committee of local businessmen acquired the franchise in 1962. 
  • The side was again renamed to Golden State Warriors in the year 1971 considering the fact that they represented the whole of California. However, they played most of the matches in the 1971-72 season in Oakland, their home in the NBA.

  • The first owner of the Golden State Warriors (formerly known as Philadelphia Warriors) was Peter A Tyrell, a businessman who also owned a Philadelphia Hockey team in American Hockey League. 
  • Tyrell initially hired Eddie Gottlieb as the coach and manager of the team before selling him the whole franchise in 1951. 
  • Gottlieb took over as the full-time owner of Philadelphia Warriors till 1962 before selling off the franchise to Franklin Meuli and 32 other local investors. 
  • Former Milwaukee Bucks owner and a businessman Jim Fitzgerald showed interest along with Daniel Finnane in buying the Philadelphia based team and successfully acquired them in 1986.
  • After 8 years they sold the franchise as Golden State Warriors were suffering from a doom phase, unable to win a single championship after the trade and retirements of their star rosters. 
  • Chris Cohan, California based entrepreneur acquired the franchise for $130 million in 1994 and but mostly received criticism for being one of the worst sports team owners in history. 
  • He finally sold the team to Joseph S Lacob and Peter Guber for $450 million in July 2010. Joseph Lacob has a majority stake in the franchise with Peter Guber one of the driving forces and Chairman of the side.

  • Golden State Warriors’ home arena is the Chase Center, which is located in San Francisco, California. The franchise spent over $1.6 billion on the arena which was inaugurated on September 6, 2019. The arena is funded privately by the franchise which is now a full-time home arena of the Warriors.
