Former Teammates React as “Slabhead”: Harry Maguire has now officially become the most expensive defender of all time as he is finally signed by Manchester United for a whopping £80m to winkle out from Leicester City and provide his services to the Red Devils.

As confirmed by the Manchester United official website, he has signed a six-year contract and can be extended for further one year. According to Daily Mail report, he will earn £190,000-a-week at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old English defender was part of Leicester City since 2017 and made 76 appearances, scoring 5 goals. His ball-playing skills and aerial ability make him one of the better players around.

Post signing of the contract, a delighted Harry Maguire said “I am delighted to have signed for this great club. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons. However, when Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity.

“From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team. It’s clear to see that Ole is building a team to win trophies. I am now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting the season started.”

He also tweeted, “Thanks to everyone who has supported me and played a part in my career. I’m proud and honoured to join @ManUtd . What an incredible football journey it’s been so far”

Ben Chillwell also tweeted, retweeting his former teammate. “ust when i thought ur head couldnt get any bigger?? @HarryMaguire93”

Jamie Vardy, who nick-named Maguire as slabhead, also joined in the party to congratulate him on the move. He tweeted, “All the best Slabhead @HarryMaguire93”

Maguire’s new teammate David De Gea also took to twitter to welcome the center-back, he would be playing in close coordination with. “Welcome ? @HarryMaguire93 #MUFC”.

Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also said “Harry is one of the best center-backs in the game today and I am delighted we have secured his signature. He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure – coupled with his composure on the ball and a huge presence in both boxes – I can see he will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch.

“He has a great personality and is a fantastic addition to the club.

“I would like to welcome Harry to Manchester United and we are looking forward to working with him as we prepare for the new season.”

Twitteratis went crazy after Manchester United broke their bank for the center-back, and the comparisons with Virgil Van Dijk, who earlier held the record of the most expensive defender, were imminent.

Manchester United will kick-off their campaign against Chelsea at Old Trafford on 11th July at 16:30 BST.
