When Sahara’s contract expired in 2018, Hockey India was left without a sponsor. That same year, the Orissa government stepped up to save our national sport by sponsoring it for the following five years, beginning in 2023. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik deserves all the credit for this enormous development.
They extended their sponsorship for a another ten years, ending in 2033, in 2023. World-class facilities have been created in the form of the 16,000-seat Kalinga Stadium in Bhubneswar and the 20,000-seat Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela.
The fact that several teams from different countries—Spain, England, and Wales—are in the same pool will present challenges for the host team in the approaching main event.
