Manchester City’s Norwegian number 9 Erling Haaland has bagged the Young Player award for the 2022/23 season of English Premier League. He has been racking up records after records in English football this year and it is hard to believe that it is only his debut season.
His goal scoring ability has only made life easier for Man City manager Pep Guardiola. 2 weeks ago they became champions of England for the 3rd year in a row which was also their 5th Premier League title in last 6 years. While City have scored 94 goals this season, Erling Haaland has alone bagged 36 goals in 35 top-flight appearances.
The Norwegian’s record breaking debut season in England can get even more successful. City are just 2 wins away from securing a treble this year. They have already won the Premier League and on 3rd and 10th June, they will play the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League final respectively.
It will be fair to say that the English Premier League is seeing a player like Erling Haaland for the first time in the tournament’s history. If he maintains his fitness and form well then he can be the next superstar that the PL has produced.
After winning the young player of the season award Erling Haaland said, “These awards would not have been possible without my amazing teammates, the manager and all of the staff at the club who help me perform on the pitch. Now we have two more finals to go and we want to finish the season strong.”
Erling Haaland is also the first player in PL to win Player of the season and Young player award simultaneously!
The 22-year-old has become the first player in the history of English Premier League to win Young player of the season award and the player of the season award. Moreover, it was for the 3rd season in a row that a Manchester City player has won the Young player of the season award.
Academy graduate Phil Foden has been winning the young player award since the last 2 years. The Young player of the season is awarded to the players who are 23 or less than 23-years of age.
