English Premier League 2022/23 : Mikel Arteta shares Arsenal’s reaction post City loss

Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal were rightly defeated by Manchester City, but insists the defeat has only fueled his team’ desire for Premier League victory.

The Gunners were defeated 3-1 at home by City on Wednesday night, as City’s experience in high-pressure situations shined through at Emirates Stadium. Kevin De Bruyne scored after capitalizing on Takehiro Tomiyasu’s blunder, but Bukayo Saka equalized from the penalty spot just before halftime.

Despite having nearly two-thirds of the ball in the game, Jack Grealish dealt City a devastating blow by regaining the lead, and Erling Haaland sealed the victory late on. The result saw City, who have played one more game, overtake the north Londoners in the table as their winless streak now stands at four games across all competitions.

The Gunners have a short turnaround as they played City at 7:30 pm on Wednesday before travelling to Villa for Saturday’s midday match. The tight fixture calendar is not deterring Arteta, who insists that his side will play at Villa Park with “full vigour.”

“I want the players to be in the best possible mindset and physically ready to get that challenge going. They are young! They have a lot of energy.”

In advance of his team’s trip to Aston Villa, Arteta thought back on his team’s performance on Thursday. The Spaniard acknowledged that the superior team prevailed at the Emirates in his pre-game press conference on Friday, saying: “You have to give credit to a team when they beat you but, for sure, when you watch the game again, I think that we lost it.”

The Arsenal manager claimed that reflecting on the defeat to City with his team gave him “greater clarity.” He simply responded, “Yes, I guess so,” when asked if it had increased the team’s motivation to resume its winning ways.
