Delhi Cricket : DDCA fires selection committee of the Senior side

After a shell shocking loss against Saurashtra at the Ranji Trophy few days ago where the Delhi batters became recipients of Jaydev Unadkat’s ruthlessness, the state’s Apex cricketing body DDCA (Delhi District Cricket Association) has sacked the entire selection cabinet with immediate effect.

The DDCA reportedly took this step after receiving numerous complaints about the committee which took care of the Senior side. Their decision had Delhi handing a 1st over hat-trick, a feat that was never achieved before in the history of the competition. And things went from bad to worse as they lost 3 more wickets with just 5 runs on the board.

They were dusted by an innings and 214 runs by Saurashtra and how Delhi has degraded from providing at least 6-7 players to failing to pick any potential candidate for the Indian national team.

Reports are suggesting that the selection committee did not follow the right procedure and system while scouting the players and there often dictatorship was involved too. Director of the DDCA Shyam Sharma reported the issue to DDCA president Rohan Jaitley as the former accused the selection team of being Incompetent and Irresponsible.

During a Press, Rohan Jaitley also pointed a number of reasons why the former selection committee was not trusted anymore. There was a fallout between the previous committee during the selection of U-25 team and on the light of the occasion Jaitley lodged his decision upon the committe.

“I am stood compelled to write this mail for placing on record my disapproval of the manner in which the Men’s Selection Committees of the DDCA are discharging its affairs. It appears that such Committees are functioning without any visions and mission.”

Rohan Jaitley also highlighted their decision to let captain Yash Dhull bat lower the order, decision to send an Injured player for an Injury replacement.

The issue of the manner in which players are being selected and replaced at the drop of a hat has become the talk of the town. Recently in a meeting, it was informed that a replacement was sent for a senior player who was stated to be injured, the replacement while reaching there was also declared to be injured and another replacement was sent. Despite clearly informing the Committee that the number of players shall be restricted to 15-16 players, the committee has time and again recommended a 20-22 member squad for each team. Therefore, these committees are not only doing a disservice to the DDCA but also to the game of Cricket.

He also spoke about Delhi’s failure in providing players for the national squad :

There was a time when Indian team would have at least 4 to 5 Delhi players. The situation today is such that we cannot name even a single player whom we (the management as well as the selectors) perceive as a potential candidate for the national team. There is absolute lack of planning for Delhi Cricket is apparent on the face of it more so with regard to the vision and future course as discussed and planned…It is unfortunate that the Selection Committee has shown scant commitment to the same.

To my mind, it is most important not only that the head coach attends each and every selection committee meeting, his views must also be taken into consideration before taking any final decision on the selection. This attains much importance once the selectors wash their hands off by commenting that “we select team and the coach select the playing eleven
