Commonwealth Esports Championship: Things you should know about the marquee event in detail

Commonwealth Games is all set to start from July 28th 2022 will be concluded on August 8th 2022 in Birmingham and the good news for all ardent gamers is the launch of Esports Championship as a part of pilot project in the marquee event.

It will not be CWG medal events, and the championship will have their own medals and branding.

The organizers of Commonwealth Games Federations have recently announced that the event will feature two categories- Open category and women based category.

We are delighted to unveil three major titles for the Commonwealth Esports Championships in Birmingham this summer. There is no doubt this innovative and exciting event will create new learnings and opportunities for us to further explore esports,” said Katie Sadleir, CEO of the CGF.

Interestingly, Commonwealth Esports forum will also held at the same venue on August 5th 2022.

The major progress that the field of Esports has taken in last 2-3 years apart from enhancing market size and viewership is their appearance as medal event in the upcoming Asian Games which is scheduled in Hangzhou, China later this year.

Apart from eight medal events up for grab in Asian Games, two additional games as Robot Masters and VR Esports will be played as demonstration events at the Asian Games.

In upcoming Asian Games, 24 medal is up for grab across eight different video games which include-FIFA (made by EA SPORTS), PUBG Mobile, Arena of Valor, Dota 2, League of Legends, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, HearthStone and Street Fighter V.

Coming back to Commonwealth Esports Championship, where games minister Nigel Huddleston released a statement that Esports event will connect millions of young people across the commonwealth forum and focus towards providing entertainment to fans and building more communities of Esports.

“The Commonwealth Esports Championships is a major vote of confidence in the West Midlands’ and UK’s thriving esports industry and an exciting chance to look at how this can be brought into the Commonwealth Sport Movement.”  Nigel Huddleston said.

As this is the pilot project and if the event turned out to be successful, it can be included in 2026 Commonwealth Games which will be held in Victoria.
