Ashes 2019- New records & Milestones Made During The Test Series

Ashes series 2019 has undoubtedly been the most thrilling and suffocatingly tense series since Ashes 2005. It will go as one of the greatest Ashes bout in the cricket annals. The series had all the controversial ingredients of becoming a blockbuster- it had booing, revenge, life-threatening injuries and not to forget the broad walk with a standing ovation.

There was not a single moment when as a fan you feel bored. The intense rivalry kept the fans at the edge of their seats, the series was never meant for weak hearted people, but in the end, it was a picturesque promotion of test cricket. Let’s take a look at all the incredible records and achievements made during the Ashes 2019:-

Match records

  • It was the first test series of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship 2020-21
  • It was the first drawn Ashes series since 1972. Australia retained the Ashes after winning the fourth test as they were the Ashes holder last time.
  • Post Ashes 2019 series Australia leads the tally with 33 series win to their name to England 32 series win, 5 series resulted in a draw.

Batting records

  • Steve Smith ended the series with 774 runs in 7 innings at an average of 110.57. His last 7 innings scores are 144, 142, 92, 211, 92, 80 and 23.
  • This is the highest run tally since 1989, although overall he stands at number 5 position only behind Don Bradman (810 runs in 1936/37 series), Mark Taylor (839 runs in 1989 series), Wally Hammond ( 905 runs in 1928/29 series) and again Don Bradman and this time as all-time highest series run getter with 974 runs in 1930 series.
  • Smith became the sixth batsman to score 700+ runs in the series twice. The other batters to have achieved the milestone are Don Bradman, Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Everton Weekes and Gary Sober.
  • Steven Smith has hit 3 centuries in the Ashes 2019, that also includes a double ton.Steve Smith has also hit most number of fours throughout the tournament. He has hit 92 fours in 7 innings.
  • Ben Stokes has hit most sixes throughout the series, he has hit 13 sixes in 10 innings.
  • Joe Root completed his 7000 runs in test cricket
  • Jonny Bairstow completed 4000 runs in test cricket
  • Marnus Labuschagne has scored most fifties in the Ashes 2019. He scored 4 fifties in 7 innings.
  • Usually we expect a staggering strike rate from batsmen, but this time it’s fast and furious Mitchell Starc with a strike rate of 89.06.

Bowling records

  • Pat Cummins is by far the most successful bowler of Ashes 2019, he took 29 wickets in 5 tests, with 2 four wicket hauls to his name.
  • The black storm Jofra Archer embarked a long lasting impression on the Aussies with his lethal bowling spells. He has the best bowling figures of 6/45 in just 17.1 overs. He is also the only bowler to have taken 2 five wicket hauls in the series.
  • Although James Pattinson wasn’t among the wickets, but was the most economical bowler with an economy of 2.57 runs per over.

Other records

  • Aleem Dar equaled the record for most test matches umpired till date with 128 tests.
  • It was the first ever series where 12 batters batted in an innings. After suffering a concussion Steve Smith was replaced by Marnus Labuschagne to bat. This was also the first ever substitution in a test match.
  • England registered the highest successful run chase in tests, they chased 362 runs in the fourth innings of the third Ashes test.
  • England score of 67 was the lowest score against Australia since 1948.
