Manchester United has finalized the signing of goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan for a reported fee of £47.2m (55m euro). The 27-year-old Cameroon international has inked a five-year contract, extendable by a year. The deal comprises an initial payment of £43.8m and potential add-ons of £3.4m.

Onana, formerly with Ajax, will join the United squad on their pre-season tour in the United States. He will be taking over as the first-choice keeper, succeeding David de Gea, who departed in July after 12 years with the club. Onana previously played under United manager Erik ten Hag during his successful stint with Ajax, which included three league titles.

Despite a nine-month ban in 2021 for a doping violation, Onana’s performances have been impressive. He played a crucial role in Inter’s journey to last season’s Champions League final, where they were defeated 1-0 by Manchester City.

Throughout his career, Andre Onana has achieved a total of 104 clean sheets in 255 club appearances, including an impressive 13 clean sheets in the last Champions League season.

Ten Hag’s decision to bring him to Manchester United was undoubtedly influenced by Onana’s outstanding performance in the Champions League final, showcasing his proficiency in modern goalkeeping with ball distribution and acting as a vital part of the team’s attacking strategy.

The contemporary role of goalkeepers now encompasses being adept at handling the ball, playing precise short and long passes, and offering crucial angles for possession-dominant sides to advance on the pitch.
