Afghanistan kickstarted their T20 World Cup campaign in style, thrashing debutants Uganda by a huge 125 runs in their Group C encounter at Providence Stadium, Guyana. In AFG vs UGA match, Afgan’s shows a brilliant batting display followed by an exceptional bowling performance, which sealed a convincing victory for them.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran got Afghanistan off to a flying start. Together they put on a 154-run opening partnership. Gurbaz, known for his aggressive batting, smashed a quickfire 76, including 4 boundaries and 7 sixes. Zadran played a solid supporting role, contributing 70 runs with 4 sixes and 6 boundaries.

After the departure of the openers, Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi continued the momentum. Najibullah added a valuable 23 runs, while the experienced Nabi chipped in with a handy 14 not out. Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 183/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Bowling masterclass from Fazalhaq Farooqi
Uganda’s chase never really got going as Afghanistan’s bowlers, led by the exceptional Fazalhaq Farooqi, crumbled their batting line-up. Farooqi adjudged the Player of the Match, was unplayable, taking a sensational 5 wickets for just 9 runs in his 4 overs. He dismissed Uganda’s top three batsmen within the powerplay, leaving them reeling at 8/3.
The remaining Ugandan batsmen offered little resistance. Openers Ronak Patel and Simon Ssesazi were dismissed cheaply, while the likes of Robinson Obuya (14) and Riazat Ali Shah (11) failed to convert starts into big scores. Notably, Robinson Obuya’s 14 runs were the highest score among Uganda’s batsmen.
While Farooqi was the star of the match with his pace attack, Afghanistan’s spin duo of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman also played a crucial role. Khan, the world’s number one ranked T20 bowler, picked up 2 wickets, while Mujeeb chipped in with 1 wicket. Uganda were eventually bundled out for a meager 58 runs in 16 overs, handing Afghanistan a dominant victory.
This win puts Afghanistan in a strong position in Group C, alongside powerhouses like West Indies and New Zealand. Their batting looked well-oiled, with both openers and the middle-order contributing valuable runs. The bowling attack, spearheaded by Farooqi, was disciplined and clinical.
