Experienced Duo Aims for First Title in Years

Leading the Indian charge at the US Open will be the experienced women’s doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly. Currently ranked 24th in the world and Commonwealth Games bronze medallists, they are seeded second in their category. They’ll be aiming to clinch their first BWF title since winning the Odisha Open two and a half years ago.

Gopichand and Jolly have been in impressive form recently, reaching the semifinals of the Singapore Open earlier this month. Their journey to that stage included victories over top contenders like All England champions Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee, along with Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong. This momentum bodes well for their chances at the US Open, where they’ve received a bye in the first round.

Priyanshu Rajawat and Young Guns Look to Make Their Mark

Priyanshu Rajawat, a key member of India’s historic 2022 Thomas Cup winning team, will also be looking to leave his mark in the men’s singles competition. Eager to add to his trophy cabinet, Rajawat will be aiming for his first BWF title since winning the Orleans Masters last year. Seeded eighth, he opens his campaign against Jan Louda of the Czech Republic.

In the women’s singles, the absence of superstar PV Sindhu will provide a platform for Malvika Bansod and Tanya Hemanth to showcase their skills. Ranked 49th and 73rd in the world respectively, Bansod and Hemanth will be determined to prove their mettle against strong competition.

While the likes of Sindhu and the men’s doubles pair of Shetty and Rankireddy prepare for the ultimate test in Paris, the US Open offers a crucial opportunity for India’s younger badminton talents. They can gain valuable experience against top international competition, test their skills, and potentially claim titles that would propel them higher in the rankings.

The performances at the US Open will be a strong indicator of India’s future badminton prospects and could potentially shape the strategy for the upcoming Olympic Games. With a strong showing in Texas, these young athletes could solidify their positions as contenders on the world stage and build momentum towards Paris glory.
