The ICC T20 world cup 2022 is just a few days away from kicking off as the group stages are set to get underway from 16th October. The group stages will decide who will join the other 8 teams in the Super 12s.
The Winners and Runners-up from Group A and B will move forward to the next rounds of the tournament (Super 12) which is scheduled to begin from 22 October. Last year’s finalists Australia and New Zealand will kick start the tournament live from Sydney cricket ground.
But before the mega T20 event begins, let’s find out which 5 batters have hit consecutive 50 fifties in ICC T20 world cup until now.
- Mahela Jayawardene – The former Sri-Lankan opener and captain is a part of almost every T20 world cup batting record and he is at the pinnacle of this list as well. Jayawardene was one of those players who trusted his technique and played classy textbook cricketing shots all around the ground. His technique and desire to evolve according to the modern demands of cricket saw him score a total of 1016 runs in 31 outings from 2007-2014. During the 2010 T20 world cup in West Indies, Mahela Jayawardene scored 3 back-to-back Half-centuries which includes an 81 against New Zealand, 100 against Zimbabwe and 98 against hosts West Indies.
- Virat Kohli – One of the modern day greats, Virat Kohli is the only player to receive two ICC T20 world cup man of the tournament awards consecutively in 2014 and 2016. Kohli also has the highest average in the tournament with 76.81. He will hope to make it better later this month as team India will be banking on his experience and past performances in the land down under. The 33-year-old is yet to win the prestigious T20 world cup trophy despite reaching the final in 2014. The former captain struck two successive 50’s in 2014 T20 world cup against West Indies (54) and Bangladesh (57*)respectively.
- Matthew Hayden – The former Aussie opener was one of the most feared batsmen during his time as a player. His pairing with Adam Gilchrist is perhaps one of the best partnerships that world cricket has ever witnessed. Across all formats, Hayden amassed a total of 15,066 runs and also won two ICC 50 over world cups on the trot. He also finished the inaugural edition of the T20 world cup as the highest run scorer with 265 runs and smashed the most number of boundaries with 32 fours and 10 sixes to his name. “Haydos” smacked two successive half-centuries in 2007 edition including a 58 not out against Sri-Lanka and 62 against India.
- Rohit Sharma – New Indian captain Rohit Sharma will be hoping to lead his side towards a second T20 world cup triumph and first since 2007. He was a crucial part of the Indian team that won the inaugural edition of the mega T20 event 15 years ago. The 35-year-old opener will look to end India’s 7 year drought of winning an ICC silverware. In terms of sixes, Sharma has the most maximums in T20Is with 178 sixers to his name. Just like Kohli, Rohit Sharma also struck two back-to-back half-centuries against the same opponents. In 2014 T20 world cup in Bangladesh remained 62 not out against West Indies followed by a 56 against Bangladesh.
- Kevin Pieterson – Former England Batsman Kevin Pieterson concludes this list thanks to his half-centuries during England’s 201o T20 world cup winning year. He was one of the major reasons why the Three Lions were able to win their first ever ICC silverware as he finished as the second highest run getter with 248 runs in 6 innings. His batting style was completely different than other English batters during his time. Pieterson was somehow an inspiration to explosive Batsmen’s like Alex Hales, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and many more current English cricketers. His 73 off 52 against Pakistan and 53 off 33 balls against South Africa helped him secure the 5th spot in this list.
