Tejaswini Sawant Biography: Tejaswini Sawant is an Indian shooter who specializes in 10m Air Rifle and 50m rifle 3 Positions. Recently she qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics by making into the finals of the women’s 50 m three positions event at the Asian Shooting Championships in Doha. 

EARLY LIFE:

Tejaswini was born on 12th September 1980 in the city of Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Her father’s name is Ravindra Sawant and her mother’s name is Sunita Sawant. Tejaswini’s interest in shooting started when she was just 13 years old. Her father was an Indian Navy Officer and served the nation until he died in February 2010.

Spouse- Sameer Darekar

Born in the Armed forces family, Tejaswini lived a very disciplined life. She has two younger sisters Vijaymala Gavali and Anuradha Pitre. She got married at the age of 26 to Well known Social Figure and Builder by profession Sameer Darekar of Pune on 11 February 2016. She currently lives in Pune with her husband and the rest of her family.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE:

Coach- Jaisingh Kusale &  Kuheli Gangulee

Tejaswini started her career at the age of just 13. She used to practice at the Dudhali area shooting facility with a dream of becoming India’s top shooter. Initially, she received training from the local coach Jaisingh Kusale in her hometown. But as the years passed by she levelled her game and started participating in various tournaments. But her first-ever International exposure came in 2004 when she participated in the 9th South Asian Sports federation games in Islamabad. She ended up with a gold medal at that tournament.

As of now, Tejaswini is an officer on special duty (OSD) in the sports department. She also trains under her personal coach Kuheli Gangulee. For her contribution to the women’s shooting, she also received the Arjuna Award in 2011. 

  • She started participating in the National level tournaments in 2005 where she had impressive performances. She won 5 Gold, 6 Silver and 5 Bronze medals in the National Championships.  
  • In 2006, Tejaswini was selected to represent India at the Commonwealth Games.  She won the Gold medals at the Women’s 10 m Air Rifle Singles event and Women’s 10m Air Rifle Pairs along with the shooter Avneet Kaur Sidhu in Melbourne.
  • Tejaswini’s next International shooting event was in 2009 when she participated in the 2009 ISSF World Cup held in Munich. She won the bronze medal in 50m Air Rifle 3 Position. 
  • In the very next year, she became the first-ever Indian Women to win a gold medal at the World Championships in the 50 m Rifle Prone event in 2010. In the same year, she won the silver medal in the Women’s 50 rifle prone singles and Bronze medal in Women’s 50m rifle prone pairs event along with Meena Kumari. She also won the silver medal in the Women’s 50 m rifle 3 positions event along with Lajjakumari Goswami. 
  • At the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, She won a silver medal in Women’s 50m Rifle Prone finals event. She also set a new record in the Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Position Finals with a Game Point of 457.9 in the event. 
  • At the 2019 Asian Shooting Championships in Doha, Tejaswini qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by y finishing fifth in the qualification in the Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Position.
