Tamil Actor Sethupati To Play Muralitharan In ‘800’: Biopic genre is the new favourite in the Indian film industry. The genre has been picked up by many and number of biopics, especially on sports stars are on the way.

The latest following the trend is “800”, where Tamil Actor Vijay Sethupathi is set to play the legendary Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. The title is based on Muralitharan’s wicket tally of 800 in Test cricket, which is the highest in the history of the game. He achieved this feat against India in a home series.

The trend has been rife and in the last 2-3 years, we have seen a number of biopics on sports personalities like MS Dhoni, Milkha Singh, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Mary Kom. Ranveer Singh is also preparing for a biopic on Team India’s 83 World Cup victory, which is scheduled to release in April 2020.

The spin wizard of Sri Lanka was born in Kandy in 1972. He made his debut in International cricket in 1992 and played his last game in 2011 against India in the World Cup Final. He was also a part of Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning campaign in 1996. Muralitharan played 133 Tests, 350 ODIs and 12 T20Is in a glorious career spanning 19 years. He picked up 1247 international wickets in all formats, including 534 ODI and 800 Test wickets.

He played his last Test in Galle against India in 2010, while his last ODI was the 2011 World Cup final. He also has 63 wickets in IPL to his name. Currently, he is the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Muralitharan’s bowling action was also criticized in the 90s when Australian umpire targeted him over his action. During an ODI game, he faced the challenge from the umpire and in protest, Sri Lanka skipper Arjun Ranatunga decided to leave the field. Despite all challenges and hurdles that came in his way, Muralitharan beat Shane Warne in the tally of highest wickets in red-ball cricket.

As per reports, Sethupathi is busy in other projects and he will start working on this biopic soon. His last film was Sindhubad, which failed drastically at the box office. Now, the fans and he, himself, would be looking forward to exciting times ahead as he sets to play Muttiah Muralitharan.
