T20 World Cup 2024: Reserve Days for Semi-finals & Final
The good news is that reserve days are available for the first semifinal and the final. It offers a chance to complete the match if rain disrupts the original schedule. However, there’s a catch for the second semifinal.
- First Semi-final: If rain disrupts the first semifinal, there’s an extra 60 minutes of playing time on the scheduled day. If the match still can’t be finished, an additional 190 minutes are allocated on the following day, starting at 2 pm local time.
- Second Semi-final: Unlike the first semi-final, the second one doesn’t have a designated reserve day due to the tight schedule. However, the ICC allows for an extended match on the scheduled day itself. An extra 250 minutes are set aside to try and complete the game.
- Final: The final has a dedicated reserve day, June 30th, with a maximum of 190 minutes of playing time. The match will start at 10:30 am local time.
Shortened Games & Reserve Days
If rain forces a shortened match in the first semifinal or the final, and the game spills over to the reserve day, it won’t be a fresh start. The match will resume from where it left off, meaning both teams will continue batting with the reduced number of overs they were originally allocated.
What Happens if a Match Gets Abandoned Completely?
Even with reserve days, sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate. Here’s what happens in these scenarios:
- Semi-final: If a semi-final gets completely washed out and can’t be played at all, the team that finished on top of their Super Eights group will automatically advance to the final.
- Final: If the final is completely abandoned, both teams will be declared joint winners – a historic moment for both sides.
- Super Over: If a tied semi-final or final can’t even complete a Super Over due to rain, the same rule as above applies – the team that topped the Super Eights group will progress/be declared co-champions.
