Srikanth Kidambi is an Indian Badminton player, who won four Super series titles in the year 2017. He has made best strides for his country with his accomplishments and he is coached by legendary coach G.Puliela. Srikanth becoming the first male ever win a Superseries senior tournament at the China Superseries Premium men’s singles finals in 2014.

After that, he picks up the successive title at the Swiss Open and Yonex-sunrise India open in 2015. This best performance bringing him to a career-high ranking of world’s No.3 and then he upgraded to world No.2 in 2017. In 2018, he became the highest ranked men’s badminton player around the world.

The Early life of Srikanth

His original name is Srikanth Nammalwar Kidambi, who was born on 7 February 1993 in Guntur Andhra Pradesh. His father, KVS Krishna, was a Landlord and his mother Radha, a housewife. He has an elder brother Nanda Gopal who is also a Badminton player as well as Auditor at Indian Audit and accounts department.

Srikanth trains at the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad. He was supported by GoSports foundation, Yone, and Li-Ning sports as well.

His father told how Srikanth’s interest towards badminton developed, while the new stadium was constructed near their home in Guntur. Srikanth and his brother would go there to play and from there only their interest in the game started. Srikanth’s father believes sports play a vital role in character-building, so he decided to give both his sons to n individual sport. It was the bravest decision given the middle-class mindset to concentrate on academics.

2018

  • Srikanth competed in India Open as the second seed and he was defeated by Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin. He also lost the second chance of 2018 All England Open to Huang Yuziang from China.
  • In 2018 Commonwealth Games, he won gold in the mixed team, held in Gold coast. Srikanth also won silver in the single team event. The final result of this best performance, he gained a top ranking for a week.

2017

  • On 29 October 2017, Srikanth won French open series by conquering Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto 21-14, 21-13 in the open series men’s singles final. As well as, June 19, 2017, he won Indonesia Open series by beating Japanese player Kajumasa
  • Kidambi won Australian Open series final by beating Chen Long 22-20, 21-16 in a tough match.

2016

  • In 2016 Rio Olympics, he made a position in quarterfinals by beating World No.5 player, Jan O Jorgensen.

2015

  • Srikanth made history and became the first Indian to win the consecutive title ‘Swiss Open Grand Prix’ by conquering Viktor Axelson with the prize money of $120,000.
  • On 29 March 2015, He won the men’s singles titles at the India Open Series by defeating Denmark’s Viktor Axelson.

2014

  • In 2014 Indian Open Grand Prix Gold event, he was the runner and also a quarterfinalist in Malaysia Open held in the same year. He attained the semi-finals of the famous BWF series by defeating Kento Momota and Tommy Sugiarto in the group stage of the prestigious BWF. But he lost to Chen Long of Chine in finales.
  • One of the major highlights of his career is to compete against their idol Lin Dan and win against them.

2013

  • 2013 Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold event, he won the Men’s singles title and in finals, he defeated the world No.8 player Boonsak Ponsana in straights set. Srikanth reigned All India Senior National Championship in Delhi and finished second in the Badminton League as a part of the Awadh warriors, which was held in the same year.

2012

  • Srikanth brought the Men’s singles title by defeating the Junior World Champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli of Malaysia.

2011

  • In 2011, he made his career with Common Wealth Youth Games in the Isle of Men. He won bronze in double and silver in mixed doubles.
  • The All India Junior International Badminton Championship, he won matches in both singles and doubles categories, which was held in Pune.

He showed his excellent matches to oust defending champion Victor Axelson within 47 minutes in the first meet of his career and won the title. In 2014, he suffered from the major setback of brain fever then he was fighting for his life in ICU. After that, he struggled in a few tournaments.

  • Recently, he conferred with the Padma Shri Award after becoming only Indian to win four super series titles and second youngest to receive the award.
  • Srikanth conferred with the Arjuna Award for his outstanding achievements in sports that given by the Indian Government. Awards along with a cash price of Rs.5 Lakhs.
