South Africa vs Afghanistan: Afghanistan broke the spell against South Africa, won first ODI

South Africa vs Afghanistan: Afghanistan cricket team finally broke the losing streak against South Africa. Afghanistan team has won for the first time in a white ball cricket match against South Africa. This is South Africa’s first defeat in any white ball cricket match against Afghanistan. 

Till now, both countries had faced each other five times in ODI and T20 International cricket and South Africa has won on all the occasions, including the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal, but this sequence has now been broken.

In the first match of the three-match ODI series played in Sharjah on Wednesday, September 18, Afghanistan packed South Africa for 106 runs and then turned the pages of history by winning the match by 6 wickets in 26 overs. However, this was only the third match of Afghanistan team in One Day International cricket against South Africa, earlier Afghanistan had lost both the previous matches. This time the result has come in the form of victory. 

The previoustwo matches that were played between Afghanistan and South Africa was in the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup, where South Africa won both.

This was the first bilateral series between Afghanistan and South Africa and in the very first match of the series, the host Afghanistan won by 6 wickets.

The Afghanistan team did face some trouble in chasing the target of 107 runs, but former captain Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai helped the team cross the threshold of victory. Naib scored 34 runs and Umarzai played an unbeaten inning of 25 runs to lead the team to victory. In bowling, Fazalhaq Farooqui took 4 wickets and young Allah Ghazanfar scalped 3 wickets. Rashid Khan also took 2 crucial wickets, whereas the only half-century of the match was smashed by South African batter Wiaan Mulder.
