Shreyas Iyer’s Captaincy does Magic for Punjab Kings
On April 1, Tuesday, two teams that have never claimed the Indian Premier League (IPL) title yet faced each other in the ongoing 2025 edition of the tournament. Lucknow Super Giants hosted the Punjab Kings in their home ground at the Ekana Stadium.
What followed in the match was a clear domination by the Punjab Kings on the hosts, as their strategies in batting and bowling worked perfectly against their opponents.
Being put to bat first, LSG led by their captain Rishabh Pant could not recreate their magic like the previous game and were restricted to 171 runs in 20 overs, with seven wickets down. Their top order collapsed completely and couldn’t give the start, which was much needed.
On the other hand, when the Kings came to bat, they comfortably chased the total; thanks to the masterclass half-centuries by Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer himself.
The skipper scored his second successive half-century and guided his team to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants, while chasing a target of 172 in just 16.2 overs.
Post the sweet victory, Iyer expressed his thoughts and opined that more than the correct combination, it is the right camaraderie and synergy that enables a team to win games of cricket.
He couldn’t be more pleased to get the initial momentum with two away game wins.
“To be honest, there’s no right combination. Just that the camaraderie and synergy have to click at the right time. I feel all teams have the right potential to go out there and win the game. It’s just that you need to have the similar kind of mindset when you go out there,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation ceremony here on Tuesday.
“It is the start we required. Boys played their role really well. Every individual contributed to the best of their ability and whatever was discussed in the team meeting, we implemented really well.”
With two wins in two games, the team has moved to the second spot on the IPL 2025 points table, speaking volumes of Iyer’s captaincy, which has been rather impressive. At the cost of being biased, it is quite evident so far that Shreyas Iyer is leading Punjab Kings by example.
The combination of Ponting and Shreyas is tuning well, giving the idea that their vision this season is aligned and clear. Two wins straightaway does put Punjab Kings in a good position, but the challenge is to sustain this energetic form for the weeks ahead too.
This was one of the lesser hyped matchups between two captains who represent two different ethos. For sure, Rishabh Pant’s leadership skills and own batting skills this season have been poor, casting doubts on his form and leadership against Punjab Kings.
Iyer was the winning captain for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2024 edition, and hence his hefty price at the auction for this season was not surprising to see.
After not being retained by the previous franchise, his flight from Kolkata to Punjab has been rather smooth. He also has set high standards with his own batting. The man on a mission, with his strong belief of building right synergy in the squad, is bound to march ahead.
No cliché, Shreyas Iyer has been performing and proving himself, and this year may just be the one where the title drought team Punjab Kings, co-owned by Preity Zinta, may see the trophy coming their way for the first time in history.
