Rey Mysterio Biography: Oscar Gutierrez, popularly known by his in-ring name Rey Mysterio, is an American professional wrestler, working in WWE for the Raw brand. Despite having a short height, Mysterio has been considered as one of the greatest high flying in-ring performers of all time.

Having an outstanding career in the past, Mysterio held several championships in his professional wrestling platform that includes WCW Cruiserweight Championship and the WCW World Tag Team Championship. During his wrestling tenure with WWE, he became two-time Intercontinental champion, a former United States Champion, a four-time tag-team champion, a three-time Cruiserweight champion, and a three-time world champion. He also won the Royal Rumble 2006 to mark his name in the history books of professional wrestling. He holds a record of being in a Royal Rumble match for 62 minutes.

At Wrestlemania 22, Mysterio created history in WWE when he defeated Orton and Angle to become the World Heavyweight Champion for the first time.

Oscar Gutierrez was born on December 11, 1974, in Chula Vista, California, U.S. Mysterio began his education from Montgomery High School, however, he is fond of wrestling so he joined wrestling platform at the age of 14. He did his wrestling training under his uncle Rey Misterio Sr, where he not only learned the wrestling skills but also trained as a high flying wrestler.

In 1991, Mysterio was awarded “Most Improved Wrestler” in Mexico while wrestling as Colibrí. He got his name, Rey Mysterio Jr. from his uncle only during his early phase of wrestling.

Rey Mysterio resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma, US, with his wife Angie and two children: one son, Dominic, and a daughter, Aaliyah. Mysterio is part of a family with a hardcore wrestling background, including his son Príncipe Mysterio, uncle Rey Misterio Sr. and his cousins El Hijo de Rey Misterio and Metalika.

Mysterio tattooed his family’s name on his body and even his late best friend and wrestler Eddie Guererro as ‘EG’ tattoo on his body. Mysterio is a devout Roman Catholic.

Mysterio started his wrestling career in the year 1989 when he only 14 years old. After his training schedule with his uncle, Misterio Sr. was completed; he joined Assistance, Assessment, and Administration, where he wrestled from 1992 to 1995.

Rey joined Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1995 and then moved to World Championship Wrestling in 1996. During his tenure in WCW, he battled with wrestlers like then Cruiserweight Champ Dean Malenko and other high-flyers like Ultimate Dragon, Billy Kidman, and even Psicosis, whom he defeated in ‘Bash at the Beach’ event. He won his first Cruiserweight Championship in July 1996 against Malenko. He lost the championship to Jericho.

In 1999, Mysterio shocked professional wrestling platforms after removing his mask followed by his defeat with his Tag-team partner Konnan in a ‘Hair vs. Mask match’ against Kevin Nash and Scott Hall.

Mysterio joined WWE in 2002 and feuded with some big superstars like Kurt Angle, Big Show, Eddie Guererro, and Chavo. The year 2006 came as a golden bend in Mysterio’s career when he won Royal Rumble 2006 and later defeated Orton and Angle to become World Heavyweight Champion at Wrestlemania 22.

Mysterio held several championships during his tenure in WWE. He became two-time Intercontinental champion, a former United States Champion, a four-time tag-team champion, a three-time Cruiserweight champion, and a three-time world champion.

In 2009, Mysterio created another record after he defeated JBL for Intercontinental title to become 21st Triple Crown Champion in World Wrestling Entertainment history. Mysterio became the WWE Champion in 2011 for the first time, after he defeated John Cena.

Rey Mysterio also joined the list of Grand Slam champion after he defeated Samoa Joe at Money in the Bank 2019 event for US title. He became the twenty-first WWE Grand Slam Champion in the process.

He recently teased a potential retirement from professional wrestling, however, his son Dominic appeared and stopped him from taking this shocking decision. As a result, Mysterio changed his decision to retire anytime soon.
