Records that may be broken in the T20 World Cup 2024

T20 World Cup 2024, World Cup 2024

In the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies some of the long-standing records may potentially get broken. This is thanks to the aggressive batting displays witnessed in the recent IPL 2024, which might set a new standard for the T20 format.

While the pitches in the co-host countries might not be as flat as those in India, the way batsmen have been constantly improving their skills in white-ball cricket suggests there will still be plenty of sixes going over the ropes.

Records that could be rewritten in T20 World Cup 2024

Most Runs in a Single Edition

The increased number of matches also puts the record for the most runs scored by a batsman in a single T20 World Cup in jeopardy. Currently, Virat Kohli holds the record with 319 runs, which he achieved in the 2014 edition where India played only six matches. With potentially three extra matches this time around, batsmen have a significant opportunity to break this record.

Most Fours in a T20 World Cup

This record is currently held by Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene, who has smashed a whopping 111 fours throughout his T20 World Cup career. However, Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli is just behind with 103 fours and needs just 9 more to take the top spot.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, sits at number three with 91 fours, followed closely by Australian opener David Warner with 86 fours. With more matches to be played in this edition (due to the increase in teams from 16 to 20), these batsmen have a great chance to surpass Jayawardene’s record.

Most Catches by a Fielder

The record for the most catches in a T20 World Cup by a fielder could also be broken in this edition. South African legend AB de Villiers currently holds the record with 23 catches. Following him are New Zealand’s Martin Guptill (19 catches) and a tie between David Warner and Rohit Sharma (16 catches each) along with Glenn Maxwell (also 16 catches). With more matches to be played, fielders will have a better chance to eclipse this record.

Australia’s Historic Chance

Under the leadership of Pat Cummins, Australia has a unique chance to achieve a historic feat. They are already the reigning champions in both Test and ODI cricket. If they manage to win the T20 World Cup as well, they will become the first team ever to hold all three ICC trophies (Test, ODI, and T20) simultaneously. Interestingly, Australia also holds the U-19 Men’s World Cup and the Women’s T20 and ODI World Cup titles, making them a dominant team across all formats.

The upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 promises to be an exciting and high-scoring tournament. With the aggressive batting witnessed in IPL 2024 potentially setting a new benchmark, several long-standing records are under threat. Fans can expect to see some incredible six-hitting and exceptional fielding displays as teams and players vie for glory on the biggest stage of T20 cricket.
