Prithvi Shaw Controversies : Incidents that might impact his career in long run

Prithvi Shaw

It goes without saying that Prithvi Shaw was heralded as the Mumbai-born prodigy who will succeed Sachin Tendulkar as the “God of Cricket.” At the juvenile age of just 15, a streak of outstanding performances in domestic cricket was enough for the public to become hyped about the young player. However, it appears that India’s most promising prospect suffered from the pressure of being the next Sachin Tendulkar. Shaw last played for India in 2021 against Sri Lanka, where he was dismissed for a duck.

Shaw’s performances at both International and domestic level has been excellent. However, Shaw’s absence from Team India for a considerable amount of time has raised concerns because, given his calibre and performances, he should be playing frequently. Though, he has always been in the spotlight due to his personal issues and attitude problems, therefore it’s possible that his controversial issues have had an impact on his carrier.

Some of the highlighted issues in which he was involved were, Shaw was penalised for a doping offence during the 2018–19 season and was consequently sidelined until November 15, 2019. He allegedly accidentally consumed a prohibited drug found in cough syrups, which caused him to miss the first part of the Indian cricket season. The BCCI proposed an eight-month suspension that was retroactively dated in light of the results.

He is also seen being involved in inappropriate social media activities various times and sharing posts.

In addition, it is reported that Shaw has an attitude problem, due to which why the BCCI excluded him from the team. Shaw has also claimed that the selectors have kept him out of the team despite his outstanding performances.

Currently, Shaw continues to play domestic cricket and has participated in both the Indian T20 League and the Ranji Trophy. He presently represents Delhi in the Indian T20 League and scored 283 runs in the just-completed season. Shaw represents Mumbai in domestic cricket as the team’s captain.

Returning to domestic cricket after being passed over for international responsibility may have been a wise decision. It will be intriguing to see if Prithvi Shaw will be given consideration for the position as head coach Rahul Dravid experiments with different opening batter combinations ahead of the T20 World Cup.
