EARLY LIFE
In 2012, the Indian Weightlifting Federation granted Soniya Chanu a chance to represent India along with Ravi Kumar at the London Olympics. Exceptional weightlifter Sonia was known to be one of the best bet to acquire a gold medal in the 48 kg event in the London Games. India completed 5th in the Men’s Team with a total of 134 points and 4th in the Women’s Team with a total of 93 points and earned the quota places.

Ngangbam Soniya Chanu was born on 15 February 1980 in Haoreibi Mayai Leikai, Imphal West district, Manipur, India. She was born to Ngangbam Meino Singh and Ngangbam Ongbi Natek Devi. Soniya also has an elder sister namely Ngangbam Ibemcha who plays Wushu and completed the NIS diploma. The Manipuri girls’ first love was athletics and her parents have never opposed her interest. Soniya’s family many hardships but they never stopped encouraging their daughter. The weightlifter’s parents depended on an ox to support her career and studies. Soniya’s parents believed her abilities more than herself. For his splendid performance, Soniya received Sub-Inspector post in Uttar Pradesh Police.
PROFESSIONAL LIFE
After missing gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2010, Weightlifter Soniya Chanu worked hard to give her best in order to clinch gold for her country. From an early age, the little Soniya has achieved many titles for her state at many Junior National Meets. At the age of 11, she took athletics training from Y. Nimai and played for long 5 years. She was greatly inspired by weightlifters from her state and that is the reason she chose weightlifting. She was initially guided under Coach L. Ranjan for weightlifting. Till 1999, Soniya represented Manipur. Later on, moved her base to Uttar Pradesh & started representing UP in various national level championships.
