MSI 2024 Set to Return to China, Marking the First Time Since 2016

In the history of League of Legends competition, Chinese teams have been dominant. The region has produced the last three Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) champions, and there’s anticipation that they might have homefield advantage in MSI 2024.

Reportedly, MSI 2024 is set to be hosted in Chengdu, China, marking the first time in eight years that MSI will be held in the country, according to reports from Korean news outlet Naver. Riot Games hasn’t confirmed this information yet, but fans are already excited about the prospect of returning to mainland China.

When China last hosted MSI in 2016 in Shanghai, SK Telecom T1, led by Faker, emerged as champions, defeating Royal Never Give Up in the semifinals and CLG in the finals.

Since 2018, the League of Legends Pro League (LPL) has had a firm grip on the MSI championship. While G2 Esports managed to win the trophy in 2019, RNG has won three of the last five iterations of the tournament. The LPL’s dominance at MSI has been evident, even with a new format that allows two representatives from each region to participate.

In the most recent MSI, JD Gaming, a Chinese team, convincingly defeated Bilibili Gaming to claim the championship. JDG and BLG outperformed other top-seeded teams like T1, Gen.G, G2 Esports, Cloud9, and MAD Lions. If MSI 2024 does take place in Chengdu, they could have the crowd’s support.

In the meantime, fans can catch both BLG and JDG in action as the Worlds 2023 tournament continues on Thursday, October 26th at 2 am CT.

In conclusion, Chinese teams have established their dominance in the competitive realm of League of Legends, with the prospect of hosting MSI 2024 in Chengdu adding to their impressive legacy. As they continue to shine on the international stage, their success has solidified China’s status as a powerhouse in the world of esports.
