Early Life & Journey
Katey Martin was born on 7 February 1985 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. She made her test and ODI debut in 2003 but her T20 international debut came 5 years later in 2008. At the initial stage of her international career, it was hard going for her as she couldn’t cement her spot in the team. Initially, she played a handful of games and couldn’t take her place at the national side despite having plenty of experiences.
Katey Jane Martin is a New Zealand wicketkeeper batswoman who plays for New Zealand in the women’s ODIs, T20Is and Tests. Her primary role is that of a wicketkeeper but while she plays for New Zealand she has the role of a top-order batsman. This is because her teammate Priest handles the glovework behind the stumps. She is used as a backup wicketkeeping option by the New Zealand Women’s cricket team. Martin is amongst the most experienced player of her team. Though she is a wicketkeeper, her batting is an added advantage for the team. She is at the peak of her career and with a bit of cricket still left in her, the New Zealand team should use it to their advantage.
Once she came back into the national setup and cemented her spot. She then became a great asset to the White Ferns with her consistency and power-hitting. In August 2018, she was awarded a central contract by New Zealand Cricket, following the tours of Ireland and England in the previous months. In October 2018, she was named in New Zealand’s squad for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament in the West Indies. In January 2020, she was named in New Zealand’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
