Isabelle Wong Biography: Isabelle Wong is an English cricketer who is a right-handed fast bowler. The 20-year-old player hails from Chelsea and is slowly looking to become a mainstay in the England Women line up. She has featured for sides like England Women, Hobart Hurricanes Women, Southern Vipers, Sydney Thunder, Worcestershire Women and Birmingham Phoenix. In March 2023, Isabelle Wong will make her debut in the Mumbai Indians Women in the Women’s Premier League.

Early Life & Journey

Isabelle Wong was born in Chelsea and was born to a cricket freelance writer, Rachel. The player had cricket running in her blood as two of Wong’s great uncles had featured for Hong Kong men’s team.

At the age of five, Isabelle Wong had to move to Warwickshire with her family. She attended Bentley Heath Primary School, where she was involved in the Chance to Shine program. Wong was one of the two girls in a group of 50 boys. She and Lauren Bell were the graduates of the program.

Taking the suggestion of school coaches, Isabelle Wong joined Knowle and Dorridge Cricket Club, where she was the only girl in the boys’ team. The bowler exceeded the expectations of her coaches as she bowled in excess of 70 mph.

Soon, Isabelle Wong became a part of Warwickshire U17s team, with the team winning the cup. She also was part of the Warwickshire senior team that won the 2019 Women’s Twenty20 Cup. Isabelle Wong became the youngest player of Women’s Cricket Super League when she featured for Southern Vipers.

The success followed Isabelle Wong. She became one of the 41 women cricketers to get a full-time domestic cricket contract. Birmingham Phoenix picked the player ahead of the Hundred in 2020, but COVID-19 ruled out the season. In six games, she picked two wickets in The Hundred. In 2021, she was picked by Sydney Thunder ahead of the WBBL in place of Shabnim Ismail. The player became a sensation in WBBL as she hit three sixes in a row of South African captain Dane van Niekerk. In that inning, she was able to score 43 from 17 deliveries while hitting six sixes.

These spectacular performances earned her a ticket to the national team. The player went on to make his debut for England Academy A in a match against Australia A. In June 2022; the player was a part of the traveling reserve. However, she was part of the national team after Emily Arlott could not recover from COVID-19. The ODI and T20 international debut followed the player in the consecutive months.

Following the fine performances across the globe, Isabelle Wong earned a contract worth 30 lakhs in the Women’s Premier League. Mumbai Indians Women snapped up the player in the auction.

Few growing players start their career with One-Day international or the T20 internationals. However, Isabelle Wong started her career with the test fixture. Isabelle Wong made her England test debut against South Africa Women at Taunton. The player made her debut on June 27, 2022 at Taunton. On her debut against South Africa Women, the player picked a wicket in her 13 overs in the first innings. She did not get a chance to bat against South Africa Women on her debut. In the second innings, Isabelle Wong picked two wickets, taking her tally to three on the debut test match.

Soon after the debut against South Africa Women in Tests, the player went on to make her One-Day international debut against South Africa Women. She made her debut against South Africa at Bristol on July 15, 2022. On her debut, she picked three wickets, derailing South Africa’s chase. In her six overs, she conceded only 36 runs while picking the middle order of South Africa. In three ODIs, she has four wickets at a strike rate of 28.5.

The T20 debut was not long for Isabelle Wong. Isabelle Wong made her T20 international debut against South Africa Women at Chelmsford on July 21, 2022. The right-handed fast bowler was unable to pick the wicket but did not concede more than 5 runs per over in her four overs. In nine T20 internationals, Isabelle Wong has picked seven wickets at a strike rate of 23.8 while conceding the runs at a rate of 6.25. Wong’s best bowling figure stands at two wickets for ten runs.
