IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Ness Wadia breaks silence on heated debate with Shah Rukh Khan

IPL 2025 Mega Auction, IPL 2025, Indian Premier League

The upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is already generating buzz with its mega auction. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to finalize the mega auction plan. However, a significant difference in opinion has emerged among the franchise owners during a recent meeting at the BCCI headquarters. This has led to AOne of the biggest sticking points is the number of players teams can retain before the auction. Franchises like the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), fresh off their IPL 2024 victory, and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) reportedly want to hold onto a significant chunk of their core team by retaining 7-8 players.

On the other hand, teams like the Punjab Kings (PBKS), who had a disappointing IPL 2024 season, favour a minimal retention policy. This allows them to rebuild their squad with fresh talent and address their weaknesses in the upcoming auction.

The Shah Rukh Khan vs Ness Wadia Spat:

The contrasting viewpoints led to a heated debate between PBKS co-owner Ness Wadia and KKR’s Shah Rukh Khan during a meeting with BCCI secretary Jay Shah. While Wadia later downplayed the incident, stating their long-standing friendship, the exchange highlighted the strong emotions attached to the retention issue.

The debate extends beyond player retention. Some franchise owners, like Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal, are against the “impact player” rule. This rule allows teams to bring in an extra player strategically, disrupting the conventional 11 vs 11 format and potentially hindering the development of all-rounders. Jindal believes the traditional format prioritizes team balance and individual player skills.

Another point of discussion is the Right to Match (RTM) option, which was scrapped before the IPL 2022 season. This option allows teams to buy back players they previously released in the auction. SRH owner Kavya Maran suggested different possibilities for bringing RTM back, such as combining it with retention or implementing it exclusively.

Interestingly, reports suggest some franchises are even questioning the necessity of a mega auction altogether. Jindal expressed surprise at this stance, arguing that mega auctions create a level playing field and are essential for maintaining the IPL’s competitiveness.

The BCCI is expected to decide on the IPL 2025 mega auction plan and related issues like retention and RTM before the end of August. This decision will significantly impact how IPL teams strategize and build their squads for the upcoming season. Whether it’s a high-retention mega auction or a more open-ended system favouring rebuilding teams, IPL fans can expect a thrilling auction.
