Indian Spinners Show at Dominica as they Scalps 9 out of 10 Wickets

India kickstarted their WTC 2023-25 campaign with a dominant performance in the first Test against the West Indies in Dominica. The Indian spinners played a crucial role in securing a resounding victory, bowling out the West Indies for just 130 runs in their second innings.

After amassing a commanding first-innings total of 421/5 declared, India held a massive lead of 271 runs. With the pressure on the West Indies to stage a comeback, India’s spinners capitalized on the favorable conditions and wreaked havoc on the opposition batting line-up.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the standout performer, led the spin assault with exceptional figures of 5 for 60 in 24.3 overs. Ashwin utilized his vast repertoire of variations, flight, and turn to consistently trouble the West Indian batsmen. He found excellent support from Ravindra Jadeja, who contributed with three crucial wickets, conceding just 26 runs in his 14 overs. Jadeja’s accuracy and ability to extract sharp turn made life difficult for the opposition.

The spinners were well-supported by the pacers, with Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur also chipping in with wickets. Siraj, known for his accuracy and ability to generate movement off the seam, claimed a crucial wicket and was economical, conceding just 25 runs in his 12 overs. Thakur, meanwhile, added another wicket to the tally and bowled with great control, maintaining an impressive economy rate.

Together, the Indian spinners accounted for nine out of the ten wickets in the West Indian second innings, highlighting their dominance and effectiveness on a pitch that offered assistance to spin bowling. They consistently beat the bat, created pressure through dot balls, and capitalized on the batsmen’s mistakes. The relentless and disciplined bowling performance by the spinners ensured that the West Indies were bundled out for a meager total, leading to India’s emphatic victory by an innings and 141 runs.
