When Rain Delays the Match

As stated in the ICC playing conditions if rain comes in or interrupts the match then extra 190 minutes (3 hours and 10 minutes) are utilized in finishing up the match. However, there’s a minimum requirement for the match to be considered valid:

  • Minimum 10 Overs Each: For a result to be declared, both teams must bat for at least 10 overs. If this minimum requirement isn’t met on the designated day due to rain interruptions, the match will automatically shift to the reserve day.

The Reserve Day

In case a washout results from the event’s planned schedule, the reserve day is implemented to complete the match. The interest of the ICC in the need to complete the match on this day overrides other factors including limitations on the number of overs to be played by each team.

Here’s a breakdown of how the reserve day works:

  • Completion on Reserve Day: If the minimum number of overs (enough for a complete match) couldn’t be bowled on the scheduled day, the match will resume and be completed on the reserve day.
  • Resuming from the Interruption: However, if some overs were played on the scheduled day before a rain interruption, the match will pick up from the point where the last ball was played on the reserve day. Any necessary reduction in overs due to rain on the scheduled day will still be applied.

However, there’s a unique twist in the case of a tied final:

  • Super Over: If the scores are tied after the allotted overs on either day, even the reserve day, a “Super Over” will be played to determine the winner as per ICC rules.
  • But what if rain prevents the Super Over from happening? In such a scenario, where both completing the match and playing the Super Over is impossible due to weather, both India and South Africa will be declared joint champions and will share the coveted T20 World Cup trophy.

Joint Champions

If rain halts both the actual day and reserve day and the additional overs cannot be played even for par, then the T20 World Cup final game will be termed as a “no result. ”

Although the factor of rain wicket provides the final match with an uncertainty factor, ICC rules provide a fair victory prospect in the majority of the probable situations. Thus, fans can expect to get a full-blown face-off of India vs South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 finals. However, if rain has the decisive say, then the scenario of joint champions defines the worthy end of the stiff-fought tournament.
