Shreyas Iyer

After recovering from a back ailment, India’s star middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer will join the team ahead of the second Test against Australia in Delhi, the BCCI announced in a statement. India is currently ahead 1-0 in the four-match series going into the second Test, which begins on Friday.

“Following a back ailment, Indian batter Shreyas Iyer underwent successful rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy and has since been given the all-clear by the BCCI Medical Team. Prior to the second Test of the Mastercard Australia tour of India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Shreyas will join the team in New Delhi “said the BCCI in a statement.

Iyer hasn’t participated in any competitive cricket for a month, so it’s unclear if he’ll be thrust into a Test match right away, where he may have to field for 90 overs, crouch and stand near to the bowler, and bat for a number of hours.

The Australian men’s cricket team, meanwhile, arrived in Delhi on Tuesday for the second Test of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India. First Test to be held in Delhi since December 2017 India will be eager to see if they can go to the World Test Championship Final, and Australia will be hoping to complete a series victory in the subcontinent.

The third day of the first Test ended with a result after just two play sessions, giving India a 1-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy match in Nagpur. India bowled out Australia for 91 in around one session to win the Test by an innings and 132 runs after increasing their advantage to almost 200 runs. For his willow-bowling performances, which included figures of 7-81 and 70 runs, Ravindra Jadeja was named Player of the Match.

With the victory, India’s point percentage increased to 61.67% while Australia’s point percentage decreased to 70.83% in the World Test Championship Standings.

Australia is currently in first place in the ICC World Test Championship standings and needs to avoid losing against India by a score of 4-0 in order to advance to the June final at The Oval.
