I am learning the nuances of Captaincy from Ricky Ponting: Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant who is currently serving as the captain of Delhi Capitals credited head coach Ricky Ponting for his growth as skipper in the ongoing season of IPL 2021.

As Capitals has played four matches so far and won three matches in IPL 2021 and they are currently placed at the 2nd position in the points table after registering six wickets victory against Mumbai Indians in a recently concluded match at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai.

As Pant has replaced Shreyas Iyer as the captain of Delhi based franchise this year after the latter has been ruled out of the series due to shoulder injury.  The swashbuckling all-rounder reckons that with the added responsibility on the shoulders, he is understanding the game from behind the stumps.

“I think, yes, as a wicketkeeper I keep on reading the game and it helps me a lot. With seniors around and Ricky Ponting in our management, I think my captaincy is going great,” Pant was quoted as saying in a virtual press conference.

After winning their first three games at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai they played their fourth match at the Chepauk stadium and won their clash against Mumbai Indians.

Pant lauded BCCI for creating a strong biosecure bubble in these tough times as it allows cricketers to focus more on cricket, not on outside things.

“I think it’s slightly challenging because of Covid. But as a team, we are not focusing on outside things. BCCI has done really well to give us a good bubble and travelling thing. We are focusing more on cricket,” Pant mentioned.

“As a player, you do not focus much on match-ups. Every day is a new day, I had to go for my shots because we were chasing, so you need to focus more on scenarios as compared to matchups. We were thinking to bat first also so I do not think Rohit’s decision to bat first was a bad one,” Pant added.
