Harshitha Madavi Biography: 

Currently, donning the vice-captainship hat, Harshitha Madavi made her T20 debut against Ireland in 2016 ICC Women’s World T20, India where she was dismissed for a four-ball duck by leg-spinner Ciara Metcalfe. Over the next few years, she evolved her game and turned out to be one of the most promising cricketers in the Sri Lankan side.

She made her ODI debut against Australia on September 30, 2016, and has been a regular member of the Sri Lankan Women’s cricket team.

Born and brought up in the capital city of Colombo, Harshitha started playing cricket from the age of 7 and took to professional cricket at the age of 12. Harshitha went to Gothami Balika Vidyalaya- one of the premier schools in Colombo and later switched to Anula Vidyalaya which happens to be the largest national Buddhist school for Sri Lankan girls.

Growing up watching men’s cricket on Television, Harshitha’s interest towards cricket increased day by day and she soon found herself in her school’s (Gothami Balika Vidyalaya) cricket team. Lalanga Rajapaksha- one of the most renowned coaches in the local circuit who also happens to be the first coach of Harshitha noticed her talent and helped her in paying a way to the Sri Lanka Development Squad.

She soon changed school and switched to Anula Vidyalaya where she under the guidance of Sahan Deshappriya at Anula captained the team to end as runners-up in 2016 and 2017 at the all-island inter-school tournament.

Soon, at a mere age of 17, Harshitha made a splash on the national stage, scoring a mountain of runs in the inter-girls’ school tournaments — performances on the back of which she earned her maiden call-up to the national side. Making her 2016 ICC Women’s World T20 in India against Ireland, Harshitha is considered to be the future torchbearer of the Sri Lanka Women’s team.

Popularly known as Queen of School girls cricketers, Harshitha started her cricketing career playing for her school team- Anula Vidyalaya and has played for many other clubs including Colts Cricket Club Women and Combined Province Women.

The young, dynamic Sri Lankan batswoman made her debut to the national side in 2016 ICC Women’s World T20 at a mere age of 17 where she was dismissed for a four-ball duck by the Ireland leg-spinner Ciara Metcalfe.

Over the next 12 months, Harshitha struggled in the middle, collecting a total of 13 runs in four internationals. However, with sheer hard work and dedication she changed her game and came back strong in 2019 and done enough to entrench herself as one of the team’s most promising batters.

She was named the captain of the Sri Lankan side in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup at home. She was crowned the player of the series in the tournament where she finished the tournament with 147 runs in 3 innings at a batting average of 47.

Harshitha soon struck her maiden T20 hundred against the Maldives in the South Asian Games Cricket Competition in Pokhara where she finished the tournament at the top of the runs chart with a total of 187 runs in four innings at an average of 62.33 and strike rate of 144.96.

Having Kumar Sangakkara and Shashikala Siriwardene as her role models Harshitha has her eyes set on the future matches and tournaments and aspires to be an idol to many young girls out there in Sri Lanka.
