FIFA U-17 Women’s World cup – India hammered 8-0 by USA

U-17 FIFA women's world Cup India

The outcome of this match wasn’t shocking but the manner and the final score line was. USA took just 9 minutes to get themselves on the score sheet in the opening match of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s world cup. They outclassed the hosts at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvaneshwar on Tuesday.ย

Once the first goal came in, it looked obvious that the USA are hungry for more and India’s bleak defense enabled them to do so. This was USA’s biggest win at an U-17 world cup as they produced an exceptional attacking performance to provide some reality checks for India.

Although it was not going to be an easy task for the Indian U-17s as they were facing a nation that has won the senior world cup 4 times and the U-20 World cup on three occasions. Moreover, the Indian team consisted of players, who never had any prior experience of playing in a competitive international fixture.ย

The Hosts failed to register a single shot on target

India’s head coach Thomas Dennerby ensured that the team participated in 250 practice sessions before the world cup. He also gave the team exposure tours to Spain, Italy and Norway but all that the team could do was clear the ball from their own box.

The pressure was considerable for India as they became the first Indian women players to compete in a FIFA tournament. They will be hoping to forget Tuesday’s embarrassing loss, which saw them defend terribly wrong. The difference in terms of quality was evident as India conceded 3 goals from the corner itself.

It all started in the 9th minute when Right-back Gisele Thompson found midfielder Riley Jackson who crossed the ball into the box and found Centre-forward Melina Rebimbas for an easy tap in goal to start the proceedings. Riley Jackson provided another assist 7 minutes later from a well-taken corner which was headed in by Charlotte Kohler .

Right winger Onyeka Gamero tripled USA’s lead inside 25 minutes as she was able to put the ball past Indian goalkeeper Anjali Munda after a horrific run of play by the defense inside the box. After that, the Indian team started to lose its composure and handed USA chances after chances to score more goals.

Melina Remimbas scored her second and USA’s fourth goal in the 31st minute with a strong left foot piledriver that found the top left corner of the net. Gisele Thompson finally got on the score sheet in the 39th minute as she squeezed the ball in to make it 5-0 within the first 45 minutes.

The second-half saw India head coach Thomas Dennerby make a few changes only to concede three more. It was just 6 minutes into the second half when another floating USA corner met Centre-back Ella Emri’s head for their 6th of the night. In the 59th minute, Indian Centre-back Kajal added salt to their wounds as she fouled a player inside the box USA number 9 Taylor Suarez made it 7-0.ย

The final goal of the match was sent in by Indian origin USA number 10 Mia Bhutia. The 8th goal in the 62nd minute was perhaps the best goal of the night as she swerved a shot from long range.ย

Team India will be facing Morocco and giants Brazil in their next Group stage matches. If they continue to perform the way they did against USA, then it will be a tournament to endure, suffer and forget.ย
