After a lengthy summer expenditure on player transfers, Chelsea haven’t had a start that supports or justifies the mad amount of money they have spent. Their 3-1 loss to West Ham United last night would make Chelsea fans even more disappointed as both of their 100+ Million midfield signings – Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, kept them away from a victory.
On Matchday 2 of the English Premier League 2023/24, the Blues travelled to the London Stadium for this season’s second London derby. With a full-strength squad at their disposal, Chelsea became subject to a tough hammering by West Ham United who are also known as the Hammers.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 7th minute through a James Ward Prowse corner turned in by Nayef Aguerd. Chelsea equalized 21 minutes later thanks to a worldie strike by Carney Chukwuemeka. The visitors had the chance to take the lead through a penalty but West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola denied Enzo Fernandez.
Before Fernandez squandered his opportunity, West Ham’s Jamaican striker Michail Antonio scored a lustrous goal from 2-metres inside of Chelsea’s box. Things got from bad to worse from then as the Hammers kept Chelsea under constant pressure.

Todd Boehly’s latest midfield signing Moises Caicedo, who ditched Liverpool for a move to Chelsea, conceded an unfortunate penalty in the dying minutes of extra time. Though Caicedo appeared to have made the first contact with the ball before crashing Emerson Palmeiri inside the penalty box, referee awarded West Ham with an opportunity to score their 3rd goal.
Number 10 Lucas Paqueta made no mistake from the spot and rounded off a wonderful London derby to help his side win theie first match of the new English Premier League season. On matchday 3, Chelsea will take on newly promoted Luton Town on Saturday, August 26 while West Ham United will visit the Amex Stadium for a clash against Brighton and Hove Albion.
