El Clasico : Why are FC Barcelona and Real Madrid on verge of getting the term banned!

What if i tell you that La Liga is on the verge of banning the term El Clasico? But how can the world’s most anticipated Football match get banned? Actually the patent and trademark company which authorizes the usage of this Term has decided to prevent others from using it outside of the Spanish top-flight.

La Liga came to this conclusion after the most successful club in Europe and Spain, Real Madrid tried to trademark the term “El Clasico” for their own usage. However, the Spanish football authority denied the 14-time UEFA Champions League winners from doing so.

For those who don’t know, El Clasico is a Spanish term which means, The Classic in English. It is mostly used when 2 giant Spanish outfits, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona clash against each other. Off-late, the Indian Premier League has also started using the term on their own.

In the IPL, a match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings is known as the El Clasico. But that is not the issue. The Spanish FA is fearful of its own reputation being tarnished if other leagues like the UEFA Champions League and Super Copa De Espana keep using it.

El Clasico is now being used as a marketing tool by the clubs as well as the other leagues. Be it Barca, Real, Copa Del Rey, UCL and Copa De Espana, El Clasico is coined as a way of attracting more and more people. And La Liga are feeling a little insecure about it.

Meanwhile, Barcelona and Real Madrid still have a month or so challenge La Liga’s attempt to ban the term. The game attracts millions of viewership around the world. In this fixture, Real Madrid have a better edge than FC Barcelona.
