Dewald Brevis Stars as MI New York Eliminates Washington Freedom from MLC 2023
Dewald Brevis scored a brilliant 57 off 41 balls as MI New York defeated Washington Freedom by 16 runs in the Eliminator of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 on Friday. Brevis’s innings was the cornerstone of New York’s total of 141-7, which proved to be too much for Washington Freedom, who were restricted to 129-9 in their 20 overs.
Brevis hit 4 boundaries and 3 sixes in his innings, and he also displayed some excellent strokeplay against the spin bowlers. He was particularly effective against Andrich Nortje who conceded 40 runs in his four overs. Other contributors for New York included were Shayan Jahangir (25 off 27), Tim David (23 off 12) and Steven Taylor (15 off 12).
In reply, Washington Freedom got off to a bad start with their opener Matt Short walking out in a rather early fall at 8. The introduction of Trent Boult turned the game in New York’s favor. Boult took solid 4 wickets in his 4-over spell to lead his team to a remarkable victory of 16 runs. He finished with figures of 4-0-20-4.
Washington Freedom’s hopes of victory faded further when they lost their captain Henriques in the 11th over. Henriques was missed out for 2 by David Wiese, and his dismissal triggered a collapse as Washington Freedom lost their 4 wickets for just 63 runs.
Dewald Brevis was named the Man of the Match for his scintillating 57-run inning. He solely guided his team in the batting department and set a challenging target for the Freedoms.
Brevis’s innings was a reminder of his immense potential. The 20-year-old South African has already made a big impact in franchise cricket, and he is sure to be a star of the future. He took his team to the final of the Major League Cricket where it will face off the winner of the second eliminator.
