CWG 2022: All new events in Commonwealth Games 2022? let’s have a look

All new events in Commonwealth Games 2022? let’s have a look

After the Gold Coast Games in 2018, the CGF’s Executive Board reviewed and authorized the withdrawal of the shooting event from the 2022 Commonwealth Games schedule, as well as the introduction of certain new events to the Birmingham edition’s Games program.

CWG 2022 is scheduled to take place in Birmingham, England, from July 28th to August 8th, 2022.

Here are the newly included events in Commonwealth Games 2022,

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL 3X3

Smithfield will stage the Wheelchair Basketball 3×3 event for the first time in Commonwealth Games history.

Six teams will partake in the Games, according to the IWBF and the CGF. England, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Australia, Canada, and Malaysia are the six men’s teams, while England, South Africa, Scotland, Australia, Canada, and Kenya are the six women’s teams.

In this event, the six competing teams are divided into two groups, followed by knockouts and finals.

PARA TABLE TENNIS

Para Table Tennis was confirmed as one of the events to be included in the Birmingham 2022 curriculum in August 2019.

The tournament, along with the table tennis event, will be contested at NEC Hall 3. A total of 32 competitors, 16 of each gender, are eligible to compete in the Games.

Players on the ITTF Table Tennis Rankings as of May 1, 2022, with only one per CGF zone, a player on the abovementioned ranking who is not officially qualified, and recipients of CGF/ITTF bipartite invites, are among the prerequisites for qualifying.

BASKETBALL 3X3

This version of the sport, which is making its CWG debut, is primed for some expeditious maneuvers. A 5×5 format of the sport was played in both CWG 2006 & CWG 2018.

This event will take place at the Smithfield venue. It will include eight Commonwealth nations: the host, the best nation in the FIBA 3×3 Federation Standings from each of the six CGF zones, and the highest-ranked country that has not yet qualified.

In this competition, both sides will use half a court and one hoop, with just 12 seconds on the shot clock as opposed to the 24 seconds in a full-court basketball match.

Every team must have three players and one sub. The baskets won within the arc-shaped zone are for one point, while shots taken from behind the said perimeter are worth two points.

The team that scores 21 points first wins the game. If neither team achieve that objective after 10 minutes of play, the side leading is declared the winner.

WOMEN’S T-20 CRICKET

T-20 Cricket will not only make its CWG debut, but it will also be the first showing for women’s cricket. The matches will be held at Birmingham’s Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

Cricket, on the other hand, has been played previously, with South Africa winning gold in the men’s 50-over tournament in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games.

Eight teams have qualified for the event. The host nation, England, automatically qualifies, as do the top six ranked teams as of April 1, 2021, as official participants.

Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Barbados are among the six direct qualifiers. Last place went to the victors of the CWG Qualifier competition, Sri Lanka.
