Khan smashed his first fifty of the GT20 Canada 2023 tournament, but his team, the Mississauga Panthers, lost the opening match to the Brampton Wolves by 52 runs. Khan scored 65 off 55 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes, but it was not enough to prevent the Panthers to defend their target of 121 runs.
Khan’s fastest fifty went in vain as his team fall prey to Wolves which easily chased down the target of 99 runs as per D/L method in 9 overs. Apart from Azam Khan, no other batter could bring significant impact with the bat and the Panthers were all out at just 121.
The Wolves were led by a brilliant knock from opener Aaron Johnson and one-down batter Mark Chapman, who scored 48 and 30 respectively. Johnson hit 5 fours and 3 sixes in his innings whereas Champan smacked 3 fours and a six to complete his 30-run inning.
Both batters were unbeaten and together put Wolves to the state of winning. The batters took their team to an easy total of 99 runs in just 9 overs.
The Panthers’ bowlers fought hard, but they could not stop the Wolves from reaching their target. Zahoor Khan was the only bowler who got 1 wicket for 14 runs in his 1 over. Apart from him, no other bowler was able to extract wickets.
The Panthers’ batting was subpar in the opening match, and they will be looking to improve if they want to be successful. Azam Khan has shown that he has the talent to be a big player in T20 cricket, but he will need to be more consistent if he wants to help the Panthers win matches.
