Bombayala Devi Laishram Biography: Bombayala Devi Laishram is one of the exceptional archers from India. Since 2007, the archer is a part of the national Recurve team & representing India.
Throughout her archery journey, she has been successful in bagging numerous medals at major international events.
She is well known for some of her significant archery achievements including a silver medal at the World Archery Championship and also four medals, five silver medals and four bronze at different editions of the Archery World Cup.
For her valuable contributions to the sport, the talented Indian archer was also awarded the Arjuna Award (2012) and the Padma Shri (2019) by the Govt. of India.
EARLY LIFE
The archer hailing from Manipur started playing archery at a tender age. She tried her hands on the archery when she was 11 years old.
Noticing her interest & talent, Bombayala’s father enrolled her into the Sports Authority of India.
From the initial stage, Bombayala was very passionate about archery. She grew up imagining herself becoming a professional archer someday.
But little did Bombayala knew that she will become a pride for her homeland!
PERSONAL LIFE
Bombayala Devi Laishram was born on 22nd February 1985 in Imphal East, Manipur, India. She was born to Manglem Singh and M. Jamini Devi.
The 34-year-old archer belongs to a family that has been involved in sports & contributed to establishing new talents for India.
Her mother is a local archery coach, and her father was also the state coach for Manipur’s handpull team.
In 1996, the young archer started her archery journey & followed Jamini Devi’s footprints.
A decade later, the Manipuri archer made her debut in the India team.
Throughout her journey, her parents were very supportive and encouraged the archer in every highs & lows of her career.
PROFESSIONAL LIFE
After competing in national level competitions since 1997, archer Bombayala made her international debut in the year 2007.
Initially, the 34 years old participated as a regular member of the team.
The team not only represented India at numerous international circuits but also earned gold medals at the World Cup 2011 in Shanghai, in Medellin (2013) and many more World Cup events.
In 2013, the Manipuri archer earned her very first individual medal (international) that happened to be a bronze at the Asian Championships.
Bombayala was also the part of the recurve team that qualified for the 2016 Olympics. In the ranking round, the team finished in seventh place.
The archer also earned a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the Asian Games.
In the Women’s Individual round, Laishram competed against Laurence Baldauff from Austria at the Olympics 2016. Although she progressed to the next round after her victory, Bombayala lost in the 16th round with a total score of 2 against 6.
