England captain Harry Brook struck 202 against Sri Lanka in a tri-series one-day international in Rawalpindi on 22 October 2026, scoring the fastest double century in the format's history. His innings carried England to 429/4 in their 50 overs and made him the first England batter to reach a double hundred in ODIs, a landmark that had eluded every predecessor in the national side.

Brook hit 21 fours and 10 sixes during the innings, and the 144 runs he took in boundaries are the most by an England batter in a single ODI innings. He was finally dismissed by Janith Liyanage off the last ball of England's innings. The knock also surpassed the previous best England individual score in one-day cricket, which stood at 182.

England made a fast start through their openers. Tom Banton scored 50 and Ben Duckett added 29, and the pair put on 74 for the first wicket during the powerplay. Both fell in quick succession, which brought Brook to the crease with the innings needing a new platform. He then built large partnerships, first with Joe Root, who made 69, and later with Will Jacks, who finished unbeaten on 66.

The total was the biggest by an England captain in 50-over cricket and also beat England's previous highest ODI score. Sri Lanka were set 430 to win, and after ten overs they were 60/2, with Rathnayake and Avishka at the crease. England therefore had a large margin to defend as the chase got under way, with the match still to be decided.

The record previously belonged to India captain Shubman Gill, who scored a double century against West Indies in the second ODI last month. Brook beat that mark, taking the record for the fastest double hundred in ODI cricket away from the Indian. Gill's effort had been the quickest in the format until Brook's innings in Rawalpindi, which moved England's captain to the top of that list.

Before this innings, the highest individual ODI score by an England player was the 182 hit by Ben Stokes against New Zealand in 2023. Brook's 202 now stands well clear of it. England arrived at the match after losing their tri-series opener to Pakistan by 87 runs on Tuesday. Pakistan have also beaten Sri Lanka in the competition, so England came into the game needing a response.

The tri-series final takes place next Saturday. Pakistan, who have beaten both England and Sri Lanka, are in a strong position to reach it. Sri Lanka's chase of 430 was still in progress in Rawalpindi, and England had a commanding total to defend. Brook finished with the highest score ever made by an England batter in the format, a mark that will be difficult to match.
