Jab

The most useful and important technique is the Jab technique for most of the fighters. With a lead hand it is a straight punch. It is the most basic and effective technique used by the fighters. The technique sounds easy but it takes a lot of time or a lifetime to master the technique. It can break faces if it is applied repeatedly. It can be potentially applied by any fighter by measuring and setting up the distance, rhythm and timing. It has a particular utility as a counter as it is the quickest shot that can cover the aggressive forward movement of the fighter. Only Georges St-Pierre has used this technique effectively. It is even more effective than boxing.

It looks like a baseball pitch where a looping punch is thrown from the rear hand which includes striking on the feet where a fighter can ducks down by bending the knees and also helps in blocking by tightening the elbow and hands covering the side of the face which makes this technique different from Jab. Plenty of fighters use this technique specially those who come from Europe and Cuba. This technique may look ugly but it is most useful and effective when it comes to blocking the opponent. In MMA the fighter has to wear smaller gloves so this technique is most suitable for a fighter.

The round kick basically came from Muay Thai with some variations. Many fighters apply this kick in a very fashionable way. The technique goes like this , to turn perpendicular to the target step on the lead foot, to lead the kicking leg thrust the hip and then turn the hip to get maximum force to the strike. It is the most powerful strike which is thrown from low, middle and high. The low kick is easier than the other two. The high kick is most difficult and the middle kick is dangerous as the opponent may counter with some punches. Jose Aldo throws the best round kick with punches.

It is also known as the “Muay Thai Clinch” which combines different range of striking, wrestling and grappling with short punches. It is the grip with the hand one over the other which is placed on the crown of the opponents head and the tightly grab the opponent’s jaw with the forearm. It controls the opponent movement, postures, knees and position if it is executed perfectly. It makes the opponent off balance. Knees can also be used in double collar tie.

The double-leg take down is the basic technique used in MMA. It is the easiest technique and all the fighters have some basic idea about this technique whether they used it or not while fighting. The technique can be easily taught and learnt. The technique has many variations where knee hits the floor. It has a penetration step in which the fighter comes closer to the opponent’s hip and then puts the hand behind the opponent’s legs and places the hand behind each knee or clasping them together behind the thigh. One can also use the head by placing it outside the opponent’s torso and using pressure to off balance the opponent. It works at all level as it is considered as the most basic take downs.

The trip technique  has two different types inside and outside. It is clinch takedowns in which the fighter’s foot can be inside or outside the opponents. It dumps the opponent on the floor by pushing the upper body by taking away one of the leg for balance. This is a basic and most effective technique that can be done in different ways such as body locks with both arm and double under hook the same technique but without the hands clasped. This is also the most common technique often used by the fighter in MMA.

Sprawl is a technique which is used to avoid take downs such as double leg, trips or single leg. In this technique the hips pull back out of reach as the opponent attempts to come forward to reach the hip and the fighter puts his or her weight down to protect the forward drive. It may also include the hands under the opponent’s armpit and the hips drop back by pushing the opponent back. It is also used by many fighters to hurt the opponent with elbows and knees which makes it an essential tool in MMA in the first place.

The rear neck choke is a very common technique in MMA. It involves hitting the rear neck choke by getting to the back. This technique has many variations and it is simple to apply also. The opponent’s throat is pressed with the forearm with one hand pressing the head of the opponent forward and the other hand across the opposite bicep of the opponent. It is a very basic technique and it is increasing its popularity nowadays.
