The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a significant step to promote Test cricket in the country. Following India’s victory in the 5th Test against England, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced the launch of the “Test Cricket Incentive Scheme” for senior men’s cricketers.

This move comes amidst concerns about the declining popularity of Test cricket, particularly with some young players prioritizing shorter formats like T20s. Notably, players like Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan recently opted out of domestic first-class cricket, which acts as a feeder system for Test matches.

Financial Boost for Test Cricketers
The incentive scheme aims to provide financial security and encourage players to prioritize Test cricket. It offers additional rewards on top of the existing match fee of ₹15 lakh per Test match.
The scheme is structured based on player participation in a 9-match Test season:
- Players who play or are selected for at least 7 Tests (75% or more) will receive a significant boost of ₹45 lakh per match.
- Players who are part of the squad for at least 7 Tests but play a few less (between 50% and 75% participation) will still be rewarded handsomely, receiving ₹22.5 lakh per match.
- Cricketers who feature in the playing 11 for 5 or 6 Tests (50% or more participation) in a season will be given ₹30 lakh per match.
- Squad members who participate in five or six Tests but don’t always make the final 11 will get ₹15 lakh per match.
- Players who play 4 or less Tests in a season will not be eligible for the incentive scheme.

The BCCI’s initiative is a clear message to players, emphasizing the board’s commitment to the traditional format. The substantial financial rewards aim to make Test cricket financially attractive, potentially persuading players to invest more time and effort in this demanding format.
