Just 21 years old and hailing from Karnal district of Haryana, Anish Bhanwal is a 25-meter rapid fire pistol, 25-meter pistol, and 25-meter standard pistol shooter who represents India. Anish is an incredibly talented sports shooter who has already represented India at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and will be going to the Olympics this year. Anish will be competing in a very diverse category, but India’s one of the biggest hopes for a medal in shooting.

Early Life

Bhanwala, who was born in the village of Kashandi in Sonipat and raised in Karnal, Haryana, went to St. Theresa’s Convent Senior Secondary School. His passion for shooting began during modern pentathlon events, especially at the age of 11, when he competed in the Modern Pentathlon World Championship in Cyprus.

Later, he competed in the UIPM Asian Oceanic Championship in Beijing, China. His parents fully supported him, and his father even arranged for him to practice shooting with a pistol. His elder sister, Muskan Bhanwala, also has international medals, demonstrating the family’s commitment to athletic success.

Anish has been coached and mentored by DSP Harpreet Singh since 2015, who himself is a Commonwealth Games medalist in the sport of shooting.

Shooting Career

Anish’s modern pentathlon career began with impressive performances in the U-12 World Championships in 2013 and the Asian Championships in 2015. Among the five disciplines, shooting emerged as his favorite. Anish and his family moved to New Delhi in 2017 to gain access to top-tier training facilities at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range.

His abilities shone brilliantly at the ISSF Junior World Championship 2017 in Suhl, where he won two gold, two silver, and one bronze medal. Anish’s finest performance came in the 25-meter standard pistol category, where he achieved a new world record of 579/600. At the 2017 Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Brisbane, Australia, he won silver in the 25-meter Rapid Fire Men category, making his senior international debut.

Anish made history in the 2018 Commonwealth Games when he became India’s youngest gold medalist at the age of 15, setting a new Games final record with 30 strikes. He continued his winning streak at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2018 in Sydney, capturing individual gold and team silver with his sister Muskan, marking an unprecedented sibling victory.

Anish’s exploits were elevated to new heights with two bronze medals at the Asian Shooting Championship in Changwon 2023, where he also clinched India’s Olympic quota in the Rapid Fire Pistol event after an 11-year drought in the category.
