Anirudh Thapa who was born on 15 January of the year 1998 is a professional footballer from India who plays central midfield for both the India national team and Indian Super League club Mohun Bagan SG, which Thapa captained.
Football Club Career
Thapa, born in the city of Dehradun, in the state of Uttarakhand, began playing football at the age of 10 at St. Joseph’s Academy. Anirudh Thapa joined the AIFF Regional Academy in Kalyani in the year 2012 and later became captain of the I-League U19 football team. In the month of April of the year 2016, Thapa joined French Ligue 2 side Metz on a short training stint sponsored by Indian Super League side Chennaiyin.
On 1 July of the year 2016, ISL club Chennaiyin signed Thapa on a long-term deal. Thapa made his professional football debut for the team on 1 December of the year 2016, starting in the final match against the football club of Goa. Anirudh Thapa returned to Chennaiyin on 31 May of the year 2017, after a loan spell with Minerva Punjab.
Thapa made his first appearance for Chennaiyin in the 2017-18 Indian Super League season, starting 12 matches and scoring his first goal against the football club of NorthEast United in a 3-1 loss. Anirudh Thapa produced a man of the match performance against defending champions ATK, receiving praise from former head coach John Gregory.
In the 2018–19 Indian Super League season, Thapa played 18 football matches, starting 12 of them. Anirudh Thapa also made eight appearances in the AFC Cup of the year 2019, scoring a deflected goal against the football team of Abahani in the month of April of the year 2019. However, Chennaiyin failed to qualify from the group stage.
After a disappointing last season of football, the football club of Chennaiyin qualified for the playoffs by finishing 4th on the points table. Thapa was the center of their resurgence, amassing 1 goal and 6 assists during the season. However, they lost in the final to ATK by a margin of 3-1 on 14 March of the year 2020.
In the month of November of the year 2020, Anirudh Thapa scored the first Indian goal of the football season in the first league match of the 2020–21 Indian Super League season against the football club team of Jamshedpur. On 4 December of the year 2020, Anirudh Thapa was injured and substituted in the 16th minute against the football club of Bengaluru. Thapa returned to full training ahead of the Indian Super League match against the football club of North East United on 13 December of the year 2020.
For the 2021–22 Indian Super League season, Thapa was assigned as the captain of the football club. On 29 November of the year 2021, Anirudh Thapa scored the winning goal against the football club of Northeast United, helping his team win 2-1.
International Football Career
Anirudh Thapa made his football debut for India at the U14 (Under 14) level. Anirudh Thapa competed in the football tournament named AFC U16 Championship qualifications and was a member of the U16 (Under 16) football team that won the 2013 SAFF U16 Championship. Thapa later participated in the SAFF U19 Championship as a member of the U19 (under 19) football team.
Thapa’s first-ever international goal came on January 6, 2019, in a 4-1 victory over the football team of Thailand during the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. Anirudh Thapa scored the second goal in India’s 1-0 victory over the same opponent in the 2019 King’s Cup.
