On being asked, “How excited are you for this tournament? The game is making a comeback after such a long period of time.”
Gautam Virk, the dynamic CEO of Nodwin, exuded enthusiasm as he replied, “Absolutely, like super-duper excited to, you know, first have the game back actually. Second to have the opportunity to once again do the first on-ground event here. And at such a scale and such prize money, it’s super exciting for us, right? And being live on TV, being live on digital and basically pushing the envelope of esports in the country, right? Esports is not just sitting at home and playing and competing. Esports is being able to perform in front of cameras and in the future in front of audiences. Because that is the actual mettle of an athlete.”
“In the comfort of your chair at your home, mom is giving tea, water, whatever. But here it’s totally different, the level is too high. Here you’re sitting in front of your opponents and you have to perform under pressure, under the eyes of millions of people watching you.”
When asked, “How do you see the scenario of esports, which has changed in the last 3-4 years? People didn’t use to consider this as a full-time career opportunity. How have things changed because of BGMI?”
Gautam responded thoughtfully, “So there are two ways to look at this. From an esports org’s point of view, the line of work we’re in is growing; it’s getting better. But from an esports point of view, it has opened up this whole branch of job opportunities for people.” He went on to highlight how careers like eSports content writers, video creators, athletes, and coaches have emerged due to the exponential growth of esports.”
“It’s letting people who follow their passion for gaming find avenues to work in their passion, right? And grow in their passion and earn money in their passion. Who would have thought seven years ago that someone could work in a gaming company and be sustained or make, like, you know, 50,000 rupees a month or a lakh rupees a month.”
Gautam emphasized that esports offers diverse career paths, from being an accountant or a lawyer for an esports or gaming company to pursuing a profession as a video editor.
Gautam also gives his insights about how will this particular tournament inspire aspiring esports players.
Gautam Virk conveyed, “This is our zero-to-hero story. We have open qualifiers, and there are teams who have qualified for the tournament from a very ground level. We did invite the top teams of the country, but many teams are here on the basis of their skills. It is being telecasted on TV and the internet, so it’s a big motivation for aspiring esports players.”
