Ajax manager opens about monitoring Jan Vertonghen situation

jan-vertonghenAFC Ajax gaffer Erik ten Hag has admitted that the reigning Dutch champions are keeping tabs on the contract situation of Jan Vertonghen whose contract will expire at the end of the 2019-20 season. The player will be available on Bosman transfer in the summer transfer window.

Jan Vertonghen rose through the academy ranks of Ajax Amsterdam before joining the senior squad in 2006. The player went on to make 250 appearances for the Dutch club before making his move to the North London club. The Belgium international joined the English Premier League in 2012 from Eredivisie considering his ambitions to take up a new project.

Since his move to White Hart Lane, the Belgian has been one of the consistent performers and has helped Tottenham Hotspurs to gain the Champions League qualifications regularly in the due process. However, with the time and form moving away from the player, the 32-year-old’s prominence in the club has changed and has played just 16 games for Tottenham Hotspurs. And talking about the contract situation, the player has just left with six months left in his contract and can move on a free transfer from England.erik ten hag

More questions were raised over the Belgian’s future after the player was frustrated and showed his anger after being subbed on in the 54th minute in the FA Cup fourth-round replay against Ralph Hussenhuttl’s Southampton. However, the Portuguese tactician is keen on keeping the player in North London despite his recent struggles and form.

Ajax boss Ten Hag is now looking to capitalise on Vertonghen’s situation, admitting the defender is an “option” for the Dutch champions if everything “comes together” this summer. Talking to Ziggo Sport, the manager admitted that:

“Jan has a history at Ajax,”

“Of course we are following his situation very closely, but you also have to look at the position in which someone plays.

“If that comes together, the availability and the position in which he plays, then he is an option.

“There is no question of any age limit here. If someone is good enough, it doesn’t matter how old he is.”

On the other hand. Jan Vertonghen’s agent Tom De Mul insisted that his client could commit to fresh terms at North London and claims his client to be very happy with Tottenham Hotspurs. The agent said:

“We consider everything. There is a lot of interest for Jan, certainly as a free agent, but Tottenham also remains an interesting option for us. The door is still open.

“He still wants to get good results with Spurs after a difficult start. He wants to qualify for the Europa League or Champions League, or in this case to win the FA Cup.

Jose Mourinho and his men will start their preparation to Champions League clash against RB Leipzig after which they face Frank Lampard’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
