After a stellar 2019, Rohit Sharma says there is no way he is stopping

Rohit Sharma finished a sensational year with the ODI series win against West Indies, ending 2019 with a record breaking 2442 runs as an opening batsman. After enjoying a successful 2019, in which he went past Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya’s record of having the most number of runs in a calendar year as an opener across formats, the Indian opener said he wants to continue doing good for his team in all formats of the game.

“Extremely grateful for the year I have had,” Sharma said. “Personally, I have enjoyed batting, but there’s no way I’m stopping. There’s an exciting year coming up.”

India will travel to New Zealand early next year, which is likely to be a challenging tour for the team. However, Sharma, said the team has done well in the past year and will look to continue that into 2020.

“A World Cup victory would have been nice but as a team, throughout the year, whether red ball or white ball cricket, the team came together really well,” he said.

“Even in the red ball format, against South Africa, it was going to be challenging. Once we start travelling, we want to win games and stay on top of the table.”

During the World Cup, Sharma scored five centuries and followed that up with a double century in his first Test as an opener.

Recent reports also suggest that he will be resting himself from the T20I tour of Sri Lanka which is in January, as he had a very hectic 2019.

“The selectors normally don’t give rest to anyone in the T20 team, but Rohit has been on the road for quite a while now. He has informed the Board that he wants to take rest for this series,” Times of India quoted a BCCI source as saying.

Rohit scored 556 runs in five Test matches, 1490 runs in 28 one-day internationals and 396 runs in 14 T20 internationals in 2019.
