Afghanistan vs New Zealand Test cancelled, History made in 91 years

The Afghanistan vs New Zealand Test match has been officially cancelled. The game was cancelled without a ball being bowled. The captains could not even take the field for the toss due to heavy rain and wet ground. This is only the 8th incident in the history of Test cricket when a Test match has been cancelled without balls being bowled.

This has happened for the first time in the 21st century. Another record was also created due to the cancellation of the Afghanistan vs New Zealand Test. In the history of 91 years of Test cricket, this Test has become the first match in Asia to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. Yes, the 7 tests cancelled so far were from outside Asia.

This is New Zealand’s third match cancelled without a ball being bowled. Before Afghanistan, the Kiwi team had spent 5 days in the dressing room against India in 1998 and against Pakistan in 1989.

This was the first match to be abandoned due to rain. Even the toss didn’t happen.

Test Number: 264 – Australia vs England, Old Trafford, Manchester
This match got cancelled due to rain and there was no toss.

Test Number: 675 – Australia vs England, Melbourne Cricket Ground
It started raining during this Test as the players entered the field. Discussions took place between the MCC manager, the Australian board and 2 MCC officials and it was concluded that a limited-overs match should be played and the match was subsequently considered the first ODI.

Test Number: 1113 – New Zealand vs Pakistan, Carisbrooke, Dunedin
This Test match was abandoned on 3 February 1989, due to heavy rain. Also, it was planned that an ODI match would be played on 6 February 1989 and this ODI was played as scheduled.

Test Number: 1140 – England v West Indies, Bordeaux, Georgetown, Guyana
This match was cancelled due to rain. On the 5th day of this match, an ODI match was played.

Test Number: 1434 – Pakistan vs Zimbabwe, Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad
Pakistan’s Test match against Zimbabwe at their home was abandoned without a toss.

Test Number: 1434 – New Zealand vs India, Carisbrooke, Dunedin
This Test match was cancelled on the third day. It was decided that an unofficial one-day match would be played on the fourth day.

Test Number: 2549- Afghanistan vs New Zealand, Greater Noida
The Afghanistan vs New Zealand match in Greater Noida, India was cancelled without a ball being bowled due to rain. There was no toss in this match either.
