A Village’s Heartfelt Welcome for Vinesh Phogat

The return of Vinesh Phogat to her hometown, Balali, Haryana, after the Paris Olympics showcased the love and admiration her villagers have for her. Despite her heartbreaking disqualification, they welcomed her back with open arms, showering her with affection and honors. The village’s outpouring of support was a heartwarming display of community spirit and a reflection of the profound impact Phogat has had on their lives.

The preparations for Phogat’s homecoming were extensive. The village temple was filled with 750 kilograms of desi ghee laddoos, a traditional Indian sweet, to celebrate her return. 10-year-old Anshaj Kumar, a resident of Balali, was entrusted with guarding the sacred offerings, ensuring their safekeeping until Phogat’s arrival.

As Phogat made her way back to the village, she was greeted by a sea of well-wishers lining the highway. The journey took over 12 hours, as she stopped to acknowledge the love and support from every village along the way.

Upon reaching Balali, Phogat was welcomed with a grand felicitation ceremony. The village had prepared a stage adorned with colorful decorations, and a large crowd gathered to celebrate her return. As the festivities unfolded, villagers, young and old, contributed generously to a fund set up in Phogat’s honor. The donations, ranging from a few rupees to larger sums, symbolized the collective love and admiration for their local hero.

Sanjay Chowkidar, the village watchman, was among the many contributors. He shared his personal connection with Phogat, recalling how she had been like a daughter to him. “She was like my daughter,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. “When I used to take my round at night, she would often tell me, ‘uncle, you are so brave.’ See now, who turned out to be brave? She is the bravest girl in the world and the strongest too.”

Anshaj Kumar, the young boy guarding the laddoos, also expressed his admiration for Phogat. “Vinesh Didi toh humare liye gold hain (Vinesh Didi is like gold for us),” he said, emphasizing her importance to the village. Despite her disqualification, the villagers believed that she was an Olympic champion in their hearts, and they were determined to celebrate her achievements.

The women of Balali played a significant role in the welcoming festivities. Dhanpati, a long-time neighbor of Phogat’s, remembered her as a mischievous yet responsible girl. She praised Phogat for her strength and determination, highlighting her ability to stand up for herself and her family.

The young girls of the village, aspiring wrestlers themselves, were inspired by Phogat’s achievements. Neha Sangwan, a two-time Asian Cadet Champion, expressed her admiration for Phogat and her desire to follow in her footsteps.

The village sarpanch, Reetika Sangwan, assigned her husband, Bindraj, to attend the felicitation ceremony on her behalf. She requested that he bring Phogat’s blessings and a cloth touched by her, hoping that it would bring good fortune to her newborn son.

The Phogat Khap, the clan to which Vinesh Phogat belongs, also played a significant role in the celebrations. They weighed Phogat with laddoos and coins, a traditional honor bestowed upon heroes. The laddoos and coins would later be distributed to the poor, symbolizing Phogat’s generosity and compassion.

The festivities were accompanied by lively music and dance, reflecting the joy and excitement of the occasion. A popular Haryanvi song titled “Sherni” (Tigress) was played, celebrating Phogat’s strength and determination.

The homecoming of Vinesh Phogat was a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and the enduring love and admiration that can be fostered within a village. The villagers of Balali demonstrated their unwavering support for their local hero, showcasing the deep bond that exists between them. Phogat’s journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes across the country, demonstrating that perseverance and determination can overcome even the most challenging obstacles.
