Argentina’s Papu Gomez, a national team player, has been slapped with a two-year suspension from football due to his use of a banned substance, as uncovered by an anti-doping test conducted just prior to last year’s World Cup.
Gomez’s positive test occurred while he was plying his trade with Sevilla in November, following a surprise visit by anti-doping officials during a training session. According to reports from the Spanish media outlet Relevo, Gomez’s explanation for the positive test was that he had fallen ill a few days prior and had taken a syrup prescribed for one of his children without consulting the club’s medical staff.
He does have the option to appeal this decision. It’s crucial to understand that the anti-doping rules are unambiguous, and the substance for which Gomez tested positive was listed as prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Players are unequivocally responsible for the substances found in their system, and seeking advice from their own doctors is not considered a valid defense. Intriguingly, both Gomez and Sevilla were aware that a positive test could lead to a substantial football ban, yet he was allowed to continue playing until the official sanction was handed down.
